Battery question
« on: May 04, 2016, 07:20:33 PM »
I left my ignition switched on for about an hour (lights etc off) and found my battery had dropped to 10.2v, I put the multimeter across the terminals and watched it drop about 0.1v per minute, damn I've got a parasitic drain somewhere I thought, I took the battery off and it stated gaining power, put it on charge to 12.5v and it was stable, put it back on the bike switched the ignition on (lights etc off) and it dropped for a few seconds to 11.87v but then remained stable, so is the battery dying or have I got a drain somewhere ?, I'm confused  : ???

With the ignition on, the charging coils of the alternator are energised. And if the engine kill switch is in the "run" position the ignition coils are energised as well with the ignition on. Both of these will drain the battery quite quickly, say 5 hours till it is flat

Thanks, would the 0.1v voltage drop per minute tie in with that or do you think the battery is on its way out too?
Update, I think it was 0.01 per minute not 0.1

Possibly, depends how old it is, whether it's been allowed to go flat while stored etc, but don't write it off just yet. Give it a full charge, and monitor voltage drop over a week or so if it's not being used regularly.

Hi Mark

I hope you have sorted out this problem,

I have been told that leaving the ignition on for a long period can damage the  Electronic Ignition & possibly the coils, I hope this is not the case for you.

I have a non maintanance Gel Motobatt battery on my cb750 from Silvers, it was only about £9.00 more than the crap acid battery.

PS.... since our recent contact, have you given your bike a decent run yet ? if so how is the bike running.
I have got mine running really well now, i just made the air/fuel mixture a touch richer

Hi Greebo, it was on for about an hour but I've started it since so no harm done, battery now seems to be holding its charge (gel mat battery) I take mine for its MOT tomorrow at 4.30, some frantic last minute jobs being done tonight!, it's only 5 miles to the MOT station but strangely the return journey is at least 60 miles so I'll let you know tomorrow evening 😀.

Just been out for an hour, runs well, taken up to 7.5k and it goes like a train, great sound (if a little loud), lots of tidying jobs to do, too many to list but so far nothing has fallen of which is a positive!,
I'll get some better photos tomorrow.

It Looks well Mark & all sounds good..... ;D

Next time you go for a run, try holding the throttle in one position a steady  60mph to see if theres any hesitation.

just remind me what size main jets you used & what needle position ?

Cheers

Cheers Greebo, 135 jets, middle position needles, yes weather permitting I'll be out on the morning and I'll do as above.

Thanks Phil, it's great to be out on it, loads still to do, lots of fasteners to change, brackets to improve, professional CR paint job to be done, etc etc but all that can be done at my leisure, the main thing is can get out on it, was barrelling down a few country lanes earlier, tucked behind the screen at one point, felt like Mike Hailwood (admittedly I was probably riding more like Norman wisdom but hey!)

Greebo, I tried as above and no issues with hesitation or baulking, maybe you could try the 135's but there are plenty of variables so who knows, I'm thinking there is not much difference between a 138 and a 135 though?.

Hi Mark

I am glad you have cracked it.

Mines Running 138 Mains {same carbs as yours] but it would not run at well until we  moved the needle setting to the bottom notch.
we started with the needle in stock position but it ran like a kangaroo so we worked down until it was running well & that was on the last notch.

I don't know if our differences has got anything to do with me having a K6 engine with K7 Pd Carbs fitted, maybe the valves on the K7 are different to the K6 ??

But I have got it running just about right now, it accelerates really well right through the rev range, or should I say as far as I have dared, the sight hesitation or baulking  seems to have gone.. for now :o
