Sgt.Pinback:
Sandcast is bought and I will start soon with that project.

That bike needs a frame-off restoration with new paint, seat, pipes etc. pp.
So lots of parts that will be new because they are not there or wrong.

Now the inevitable patina- question...(I know, and old and often bespoke thing)

Make everything else as new or keep the patina where ever it is possible and sensible?

E.g. the master cylinder. Just cleaned it. So whats next

Overhaul and

- leave it as it is
- paint it black
- anodize it black

Or starter cover.
a 47 old year part with lots of rust, cleaned it. Now looks like this, far from being perfect.
Whats next:

- leave it as it is
- re-crome it
- buy a new one

Thanks for any input and comments.

Green1:
I like to see a little patina it shows the bikes been used and enjoyed over the last 40+ years
Anyone can bolt on new parts.
But If your after a show bike go crazy and change everything

I would be tempted to leave the master cylinder as is and replace the starter cover with a new one.

Personally I'd keep both, I like to see a vehicles age in it's appearance, that said it's nice to see a perfectly restored vehicle as well, now if you had a constable painting you might get it restored but you wouldn't want all new paint!. food for thought, I don't think there is a right way or wrong way, what I do find annoying is when people tell others what they should have done with their bike/car, so do as you like!  :)

JamesH:
Hey Uli, interesting subject this. Personally I would just go with your instinct and do what you feel is best for the bike.

Personally I prefer bikes that are either completely original / untouched with marks \ patina that tell their story. But that's just me...

Chris400F:
I kind of go along with James.
You have already said you will have new paint, seat and exhausts.
I don't know about things like wheels and mudguards, or what you will be doing to the engine but it sounds like a lot of the bike may be 'as new'.
That being the case the parts 'with patina' may look out of place, but that's for you to choose.
