Thanks for your kind words chaps - it goes without saying that this project would not be possible without the internet and the support I have recieved from all angles - I have met some amazing people, it is all part of the journey.

I would love to do an RC166 however my next slot is reserved for a rather special Yamaha replica.

Some other parts arriving next week - will keep you posted.

Cheers,
CR21

Stunning work, beyond words I think.

I have been working on a side project for this bike - a works style fuel cap, originally I was aiming to fit a street style cap and machined up the bezel to suit, however the works style was too much to resist..!

Spring under the cap & latch, bonded cork seal to replicate the original:

The cap is currently polished and the original was a fairly rough cast finish, however I can always downgrade the finish at a later date. The secondary locking latch is also underway, just yet to prototype.

A little update on the hub 'side project'!

Shoes back from the friction application, machined to profile and assembled to the brake plate:

Custom hardware for the rear brake cable machined up ready to have made into a replica cable:

The intake on the CR had a formed/pressed steel 'frame' with a square mesh bonded into it, a super hard shape to form without progressive stamping tooling, as it is curved in two planes and then profiled. The mesh was bonded in with some form of epoxy, and then the whole thing was riveted into the brake plate. A slightly odd arrangement, but it certainly looks very 'works Honda' of the era:

A NOS panel showing the mesh detail:

Machined up press tool:

After much beating/testing the tool was a little battered, but this allowed the thin material to be clamped up whilst it was formed over:

A first off prototype:

A few attempts later, with the closest mesh I could find & some welding wire bonded in to support the bottom edge (like the original):

Brake plate & sprocket vapour blasted up to remove machining marks, and fitted with the mesh guard, riveted into place:

Aside from paint this has finished off the hub project! Time to have some spokes made and rims drilled.

Cheers,
RD17

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for the kind words! This side project has been a while in the making - feels good to have it finally together, will be great to have the chassis on its final wheels.

I have recently acquired a whole load of documentation for the Honda CR's, including a dealer price list, the dealer cost for this kit hub in 1972 was $133 USD, with a margin of 30% and accounting for inflation this would be around $1100 USD / £881 - if only they were still available at my local Honda dealer for this price..!

A cool graphic from the parts book:

Cheers,
