Best thing to remove the old zinc is to clrean with gunk or Jizer or similar then use the 'Ashimoto' brew to strip the old plating as it is does not use mineral acids and is very gentle on the base metal . PM me if you need details. Then , preferably bead blast or wire brush or alternative abrasion method, then de-grease in acetone. Home plating to me is just now for special parts that you don't want to let out of your mitts. Having said that Allenchrome did not lose a single tiny piece of the massive batch of parts I gave then over the last few months.
It's not really necessary to remove the original Zinc. If you don't fancy Ash's Witches Brew, which I'm sure would work very well, you can just loosen the dirt / grease with Jizer or similar and wire brush the dirt off.
