Zinc plating small parts

Can somebody recommend zinc/nickel platers in the the UK. I am restoring
a Cb125k3 and have fasteners/small spacers to plate

We use Allenchrome near York. 01759303788. allenchrome.co.uk. Good prices and a 2_3 week turnaround for zinc plating.

Agreed they are good and friendly to deal with BUT I advise you to strip and prep the parts yourself for best results. Best thing to remove the old zinc is to clrean with gunk or Jizer or similar then use  the 'Ashimoto' brew to strip the old plating as it is  does not use mineral acids and is very gentle on the base metal . PM me if you need details. Then , preferably bead blast or wire brush or alternative abrasion method, then de-grease in acetone. Home plating to me is just now for special parts that you don't want to let out of your mitts. Having said that Allenchrome did not lose a single tiny piece of the massive batch of parts I gave then over the last few months.

Agree with Ash on the cleaning. We had some from a customer who had not cleaned them properly prior to plating and obviously the zinc didn't stick to the dirt

Yes You need some sodium Hydroxide pellets from Poundshop or similar ... Wilco sell it too.

You need to use at around 70 °C ...I use an old Slow Cooker.

I will look up the mix ratio for you.

Before someone chips in . Yes you can use phosphoric and and second hydrochloric acid (brick cleaner) but the latter tends to be harsh on the substrate material (steel). Both work OK but I prefer my brew on delicate components and it's what is used in hi-tech industrial use and TBH phosphoric is about the same price.

To make up 1 litre of stripping solution:-

100 grammes ---  Sodium Hydroxide  (Source Poundshops, B &Q, Wilkinsons, ect)

90 grammes --- EDTA---- (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetic acid)  Source .........:- see above post

4 grammes ----  Triethanolamine   ..........Source :- see above post

Immersion is at 70 degrees C +/- 5 degrees for about 20 minutes (basically until the bubbling stops).

Slow cookers are mega cheap (Lidl, Aldi, loft  ) and will not overheat the solution on max. setting.

Specify if you need passivate finish either Gold chromate or bluish tinge clear (example of gold chromate are  regulator cover, spoke nipples). Sometimes you get black passivate. Examples of black pass.  are 'D' spacer washers on 500/4 & 750/4 top yokes and the earthing covers on USA 500/4 rear indicator brackets. But the bluish tinge passivate is used for most parts.

It's not really necessary to remove the original Zinc. If you don't fancy Ash's Witches Brew, which I'm sure would work very well, you can just loosen the dirt / grease with Jizer or similar and wire brush the dirt off.

Hmmm ..think you are asking for trouble there Julie ..well with Allenchrome anyway but hey ho whatever.

For everyday 'renovation' of parts, a degrease and brush is perfectly acceptable IMHO. It's labour intensive, especially I your cleaning 8 kg  of nuts and bolts at a time. Haven't had a well cleaned part replated loose any zinc yet. Now, if your wanting a finish better than what Mr Honda supplied back in the day, or your wanting  perfection purely to be able to say every part has been stripped and replated then your method is obviously a better way but both methods, if done correctly will give a good result.
