Fuel tank sizes and reserve
« on: July 19, 2016, 03:23:28 PM »
Having some curiosity around my tank caapcity and reserve switching.

Just went on to reserve and filled up and it took 1.52 Gallons (Imperial).

Looking at the 500 spec it says the tank capacity is 3.1 Gal with a 0.9 Gal Reserve so I make it 3.1-0.9=2.2 Gals to reserve.

Am I missing something, I seem to have "lost" 0.7 Gal somewhere

Also I have noticed the jump to reserve is very "instant". I actually got stranded at some lights as I didnt notice the usual coughing and spluttering as reserve was needed - it just died

And YES it's an original Honda tank, I'm not quite that stupid - at least yet - but I am sure that day will come !!!

my CB500 has just over 14 ltrs capacity,

when it goes on reserve,I fill with just over 10 ltrs,

sorry its not in imperial measures, but since the garages sell only in metric, its easier for my simple mind to work out,

BTW,you should get between 90 and 110 before needing reserve

figure arround 10 miles per litre on open road

Ken , good math as our US friends say - actually 6.93 litres

Am now wondering if I had actually hit reserve. The bike sometimes has an odd habit when i park up on the side stand after a ride and leave motor running of stopping and I put this doen to having just hit reserve. Logically though that makes no sense as leaning the bike to the left would have covered the top of the reserve pipe.

Maybe I am just gettnig used to the running of these old carby bikes.

I will persevere and ensure on this tankful and really ensure I am getting to reserve point !!
