insuring a cb750
« on: October 05, 2016, 09:36:39 AM »
hi all, having at last just acquired a 1978 CB750 F2 I'm now in the process of insuring it, ive been on all the sites, ie go compare etc and when entering the details the cc comes up as 748cc and not 736cc ? on a couple of sites when I enter the registration number this comes up as 748cc but when you look on DVLA it clearly states 736cc, so my question is anyone else experienced this I even spoke to one insurer on the phone to query this and they said it was ok to insure it as 748cc I'm confused

The 748cc is coming up as the DOHC 750F2, so it's wrong! Best thing to do is phone a classic bike insurance specialist firm, such as Carole Nash or Bennets, there are many of them out there, but online search/comparison sites tend to only cater for later/modern bikes. Bikesure was another reasonable company I recall. Basically you need to speak to a real person to get the best deals, so google classic bike insurers and start calling around, don't accept the first quote you get, shop around for the best deal/cover for your needs.
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

I've got the 748cc motor as it first came out in 1983 as a cbx 750. As you suspect it is a completely different engine and whole bike to boot.

What Honda did with the 748 motor after the cbx was to issue it again in detuned form in the nineties and called it, yep you guessed it,  CB 750 F2 hence the confusion.

The original 750 SOHC series from 1969 to 1978 ish are all definitely 736cc and as you say a different bike to insure. I guess from a clarity and honesty point in taking out a policy it should be correctly identified.

I'll correct the above as I think I've missed out a model,  so it's more confusing than I thought.

The cbx 750 and further derivatives are 747cc

The 750 DOHC that ran from,  I think, 1978 until about 1982 and was part of the CB 900 architecture had a fairing equipped model also called CB 750 F2. It's this one that is 748cc and has a year clash in 1978 with your SOHC F2 that seems to be the one most likely to be giving you problems. They'll probably have a very different market value as well,  so could cause problems down the line.

wow this is a headache, ive been on to several insurers and they don't seem to accommodate the 736cc only the later 748cc model, and when trying to get a classic policy they wont insure me because the bike is garaged at my parents and not my home address how bizarre

This is a common problem with the F2, and also Honda's silly bike naming policy. What I found when insuring or searching for parts etc is that you must use the "sohc" in the title. It has become common to identify the two bikes with sohc & dohc. On a lot of sites if you dont use sohc it will default to the newer model.

For insurance you need to join a club like the VJMC or VMCC to get an insurance discount then use the phone to talk to someone like Footman James or any of the others that specialise in classic insurance. You wont get a good deal on the internet, and the cost of club membership is less than the discount you will get.

Have fun!

Footman James insure both my CB500, CB750 and new Kawasaki Versys on one multi bike policy (VJMC scheme). They haven't so far told me of any problem in identifying the bikes correctly and I've been with them for some 15 years, changing bikes around regularly during that time.
