Jon,

Depending on your budget and the style that you are after, my money goes on the Ventura System the one designed for the CB550 is still available and fits the CB500.  I bought the L brackets new from Ventura and the rest from ebay.  Its great and versatile stuff and easily demountable

When I was going through this process the key dimensions seemed to be the width across the shock mounts and the distance from the shock mounts to the back of the seat. If you can find a rack with these dimensions as you want them (ask the seller if need be) then bracketry can often be sorted.
There's a CX500 one on eBay - don't know whether that would fit with a little modification.

I have a couple of racks off my cb550's that should be possible to fit, but I would think they would need re chroming for most folks needs. I would also say, be carefull when fitting them, one of my cb550s had a rear rack fitted that used a horizontal bottom brackett onto the to shock mount, belive it or not this stopped the top of the shock moving when riding the bike, and it bent the damper rods on the bike. I was quite surprised.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
