Best rim size front and rear
« on: January 23, 2017, 09:53:22 PM »
Hi

I'm thinking of having new rims and new spokes for my brat style build.
Any tips as to best sizes.
Should I stay stock....or is it possible safe and sensible to beef the rim width up.
I really like the fat tyre, big profile look.....but I also want to ride it

Any help appreciated

on a 1,85 rim, you can fit a 4.00 or 4,10 without problems, if that fits the forks and brakes etc. I have this on the rear rim of my CB350F.
Rather go for a 4,00 instead of a 4,10 if you want the classic "fat" balloon look. The width is the same, but the 4,10 is a 80 or 90% height. Logically, I would assume riding quality will be compromised more if you have more balloon between you and the road... For racing (which I doubt you would do with a brat style) probably this whole fat tyre idea is less optimal..

See size chart of Heidenau for instance: http://heidenautires.com/tirepress/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/heidenau-tires-spec-sheet-2015.pdf

If you can find a 2,15 rim and put that on your stock rear hub with new spokes, it would be a nice low budget solution to allow for a wider rear tyre, if that will clear the chain etc..

The standard rim width is too thin IMO, it's a  1.85 and when you start to increase the width of the tyre on that size rim you get a lot of tyre flex which adversely affects the handling. You can't go mad as then you have swinging arm and fork clearance problems.

The best compromise is to fit 2.15 rims, they were fitted to the 750 as standard IIRC, no clearance issues and will take a larger section tyre (within limits) with no problem. 410 on front and 425/85 on rear is the best I've found. I raced a 500 on those sizes and whilst it wasn't really competitive it handled very well indeed.

Thanks for your help.... is that 2.15 on front and back....ie 19 and 18 respectively

Cheers

Yeah 2.15 front and back would probably be best.

Thank you....
