Perfect Timing
« on: January 30, 2017, 12:21:04 PM »
Ive set my CB750 timing up static as per the owner's manual, no problem, and it starts and runs OK.

However looking at the Honda Service Bulletins etc its clear that the dealer was expected to use a strobe, with a dwell meter.
The gist is that you set the dwell instead of the points gap, as it is a more accurate measure of how long the points stay open, then set the timing to the marks (I hope I've understood this correctly).

I can get a Gunson Superstrobe on fleabay for about £50, any good? Worth the extra effort?

Much cheaper, but can I measure dwell with it?

No, but don't think that you could measure dwell with the Gunson one either.
You could with this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Gunsons-Sparktune-2-Dwell-voltage-test-meter-Classic-Car-Good-Condition-/152408947464?hash=item237c47fb08:g:03AAAOSwUKxYcjeE

Strobe light is a strobe light, Dwell meter is a dwell meter.

The original manuals say use feelers and static timing, strobe is used only to check that the advancer is working correctly

When servicing it would be much quicker for them to check dwell and timing without touching any setup, so all ok and leave alone.

If the points are set mechanically, then the dwell would usually be within range. It's the time the points are closed to allow coil saturation to occur.

Probably more useful on cars that have multiple peaks on the point's cam lobes as if there is a difference you'd get differing points gap depending or which one it's checked on. Dwell in that example would effectively aggregate the error to get a median points setup.

And before you start any of this, make sure the carbs are nicely balanced.

I bought a AccuSpark S8000 and after connecting pos/neg to battery and HT clip to HT lead doesn't produce a strobe light - Anybody else used this model? I suspect its the clip on HT lead that is loose fitting. Its some time since I bought it on ebay and no receipt (or know who I bought it off

Is the HT clip on the correct way round, there should be an arrow on it. It won't strobe if it's wrong.

I'll check Roy but from memory its fixed to the strobe HT lead as it came in the box and I'm sure it can only be clipped on one way
