Stop the clocks!
« on: February 02, 2017, 07:24:37 PM »
I just had an email from Marcel in Holland, my clocks are ready.

He had the following issues, they were jerky, and the bike was always doing 10mph util you tapped the speedo:

Both dampers were empty
Rusty bottom plates
Rusty/unpainted inner cover (one gauge)
Two colored jewels were bad
One glass rubber seal was dried out

I think the photos speak for themselves:

Not cheap, but like new, as advertised.

Or you could hang it upside down on your nurses uniform so you can see how fast you're going.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

A delivery man turned up with a box from clogland yesterday, I wasted no time getting them on the bike....

On Sunday I shall mostly be trying to figure out what wire goes where again in the spaghetti that is in my headlamp shell.....

As I said in my OP, not cheap, but what you get back look and work like NOS clocks, and imagine what they would cost (if you could get them).

Here's his price list, the extras add up, as both my dampers were empty (Eu 40 each to refill), insides were rusty, 2 jewels were beyond saving and I paid an extra Eu40 to convert the speedo from kph to mph, as I soon got tired of mental arithmetic every time the speed limit changes. This involves new internal gears, not just a new face. All in just over £400 delivered, including taxes.

No, fair price when you think of the skill / time factor and you get something like new.

Behold, the magic of electrickery!

It was the ordeal I expected, as I previously found when I changed the handlebars and threaded the wires inside them, because the switches are from a later model, some of the colours don't match up. Also, the usual shenanegans when I put the headlamp back in the bowl, and it moves the wires, unplugging something.

I sent Marcel an email thanking him for doing such a good job, he replied that it was a pleasure to restore my guages. Nice to see someone enjoying his work.

She's ready for an MOT now, but the freezing winds and salty roads outside will put me off for a bit.

As an aside to the topic, she is still a bugger to start from cold, IDK why, the carbs were ultrasoniced and new pilot jets fitted, timing and tappets are bang on, all air screws are set at 1 turn out. Maybe when I can get her round to my mate's to get the carbs synched it will improve. I will also get some fresh petrol, though I've always been a bit sceptical when people say it goes off.

Trust me; it does go off, smells like cough mixture and the calorific value plummets to that of logs.   I've found it doesn't last more than 2 months, after which time I put it in my wife's car.  She drives so slow she doesn't notice.
