Oil Pump Priming +(again!)
« on: February 22, 2017, 06:46:05 PM »
I've just fitted engine/pump and although I'm no where near start up (need sump on to route CR exhaust system) I have taken the general forum advice and packed the pump with vaseline. Can the experts on pump priming confirm that you just pack all the rotors/gallery's - ie there's no special technique?
Thanks
Phil

From the £ shop and just pack it in before putting the pump back together.

Is this a better method than just submerging it in oil and turning it to get all the air bubbles out?

Oil will just run out the pump with gravity ;) Don't ask me how I know this  :) :)

Submerge pump in oil turn it over an lift the oil stopper/leak valve (very thin screw driver) turn the pump and immediately you will see the air bubble gulp out, release the valve you will instantly feel the extra resistance, I have done this many times and learned it's the only way to get  the oil pressure up quickly

That is fine, as long as your not building engines and sitting them on shelves for six months +.

I had a problem every time, despite priming and trying vaseline.

Only thing that worked was making up an adaptor using a tubeless car tyre valve in rubber pipe and pressurising oil tank via the breather.

With plugs removed was able to get oil pressure light out before starting
