Brake/Clutch Lever Protectors

This isn't a tip from me I'm afraid, I'm in need of one.

These are the things I'm talking about. Is there a trick to fitting them?

I got a couple but the first one I tried to fit split. I don't know if this was because of the age of the rubber or my technique? I'd smeared a solution of washing up liquid and water on the inside. There is a small hole in the end to let any air/liquid out so pressure shouldn't be an issue, but when the thinest part of the rubber got to the fattest part of the ball, it just split the rubber.

So I'm wondering if there's some secret to fitting these?

I'm assuming these were standard fitment as my CB750K6 was supplied with them but both damaged. I've got new Honda levers on order and a couple more of these little blighters.

If you have a copy lever, the ball is larger than the OEM one and the rubber will never go on. I used Back to Black, silicone spray but it is still a bit fiddly.

I managed to fit an OEM on a David Silver copy. I used WD40 I think, but heated the rubber protector first in hot water. Let it soak for about 5mins. It was fiddly, but did go on with no issues and has been there for 18months with no splits.

I used red rubber grease, quite a stretch but went on ok.

Perhaps I was just unlucky with the one's I got first time. They were in fact NOS from a dealer but the earlier part number 16000 not the 16001 they were superseded by. Perhaps it was the age of the rubber. I'm getting OEM levers and so I'll be more careful with the next ones. Thanks for the advice.

Hot water. Not boiling but very hot, in a cup, take out to garage. Chuck rubber part in for a minute or two, until it softens, fit while still warm.

I use the same method for rubber and plastic fuel / oil / breather lines that are a tight fit, works every time. With say a breather pipe you only have to put the end of the pipe in the hot water. When it cools the rubber re hardens and will be as snug as a snug thing.
