CBX1000 prototype
« on: May 27, 2017, 07:15:55 PM »
Just found this old photo of the CBX1000 prototype, evidently taken in 1976, looks so much better than the model they eventually produced IMO.

Interesting,  looks like a mock up rather than prototype.

Appears to be a 750 K7 with a modelled cylinder and head stuck onto 750 crankcase, number one conrod would be going into the alternator!

Good to see early design ideas compared to however they evolved.

Great photo & would be good to see some more prototypes.  I remember seeing one in the past of the CX500, that did look odd!

Nice for something modern, but a few things just look so wrong! Clocks are too small, and a cable from front brake lever to master cylinder just looks "wrong" the master cylinder needs to be on the bars, using a cable just leaves more problems, stretching/getting stiff/seizing. And worst of all, NO kickstart!

I don't like the solid discs, the clocks are Ok for me, a bit like the early clocks.

And defo need a kickstart. I still use mine on my XS1100

Didn't the SS50 and the CB200 have entirely cable operated discs as production models?

Yes they did, along with the CB100N and CB125T 1+2 models What I don't like is the mix of cable and hydraulics, just more bits to go wrong!

CB750 early prototype sandcast on test in 1968 ...... Lots of CB450 parts on it!

And in the case of the CB200 which I owned in 1980 I can confirm that they didn't work very well at all 👀

I seem to remember 70's BMW bikes had a cable to the mastercylinder ,then hydraulics to the calipers

;) yes i think the cbx1000 is just a mock up there are lots of cb750 bits on it ,like the cb750 prototype had lots of cb450 bits on it. as you would expect; this reminds me of the honda cb750 prototype with a cb450 half chrome tank on it.the owner admitted years later that it was a fake
and closer to home a guy told me 30 years ago that his brother had the first cb750 in wales and it came with a drum front brakes lol i have six the only one i have with a local reg number was sold in 1971 lol as you know the big shops in england got them before any body else in the uk
in fact my first cb750 i bought locally the owner then from swansea had too go to london to buy it.food for thought init  ;)
