Mudguard Rust Proofing Recommendations Please
« on: July 25, 2017, 09:18:17 AM »
I now have some nice new shiny bits to bolt on, so before I do, what would people recommend for preventing / reducing rust underneath mudguards - Waxoyl, Por15, paint, others  ?

I prefer to remove/treat rust them paint, but just scrubbing the loose of and waxoyling it is an option. I use ACF50 on the outer surfaces, I'm not a fan of polishing so some corrosion protection is needed.

For mudguards, a method I was introduced to was to pack the crevices beneath brackets etc. with grease. I then used spray wax oil on the whole underside of the mudguard.

I've used a product called 'Zinga' before. I coat all crevices and exposed threads with it. Its a brush on zinc type coating used by electricians to protect the cut ends of galvanised conduits to stop them rusting. I'm not sure if you can still buy it but try an electrical retailer like Wholesale Fittings, or RS Components they may stock it. I work on the underground and I've never seen conduit corrode when this product is used. The tube can be a harsh environment with damp and humid conditions.

Coatings like these can be a bit of a double edged sword. Any break in the coating will cause moisture retention and can make matters worse.

Brush off the loose rust, treat the rest with Bilt-Hamber Hydrate 80 then spray with stone chip primer.

it's as good as anything out there.

I like waxoyle.... it’s messy but once applied gives great long lasting protection, doesn’t chip off like paint...

I washed off all the dirt, wire brushed off as much rust as I could then treated the surface with Bilt-Hamber Hydrate 80 (but any of the tannate complexing agents will do) then sprayed the whole underside with aerosol stone chip primer.

it's handy because you can wipe off overspray with white spirits.
