Smoking from breather
« on: August 14, 2017, 05:12:05 PM »
Hi guys and gals,
Just got MOT on bike after total rebuild, rebore too 600cc new shells, chains, seals etc.
After getting back from mot noticed a lot of smoke coming out of breather filter (took pipe off) the bike has been stood for about 3 mths with only the odd start up now and then, should I be concerned or is it just hot as running in? (Using halfords 15w40 mineral oil for running in)

Any advice greatfully received, clive

Is it smoke, or is it steam/water vapour boiling off?

Hi, hairygit well to be honest I don't know it didn't smell overly of oil and I had only ridden it 5 miles,  it was white smoke/vapour! I'm thinking the worst and hopping the best!!! Always the glass half full type me.  ;) ;) ;) ;)

Standing for 3 months, and occasional start ups will produce a fair amount of condensation in the oil, which really needs a decent run to get the engine internals thoroughly warmed up, not overheated, and the water will boil off the oil and the issue should desist. Has the dipstick got a white/creamy deposit around the top? Sure sign of condensation in the oil. Give it a good run,30+ miles, get it hot and all should be well. If not, remember until the bores are run in properly (at least 500-1000 miles) there may be some blow by past the rings until everything has bedded in properly, quite normal.

+ 1 with Hairy, you need to get it hot and out on a good 100 mile run.
