Plugs and caps
« on: August 19, 2017, 07:29:39 AM »
My CB550K3 has electronic ignition, DR7ES plugs, but also has 5ohm resistor plug caps? Is that right or should the caps be non-resistor? Does it actually make any difference?

I have been informed that all new plug caps are fitted with a resistor so, you need to fit spark plugs with non resistor, D7EA or D8EA work fine with me.

What's the history of your bike? What model (for what market?)? What brand plugcaps do you have? Are they the original ones?

Fit non resistor plugs as Graham suggests. Cheapest fix as well...

Always causes discussion this subject. A Delta hinted, different markets (especially earlier models) sported different combinations caps and plugs. Possibly because of regs about RFI. And DSS among others sells DR7ES for all 500/550s I think. (just below the 5k caps). Techis get into length of spark duration/ fuel consumption, starting, plug fouling and the like. The subject always comes up when ignition probs are suspected.
I've used both R caps with and without R plugs and never had a problem. (with electronic ignition and original). But if D7ES are cheaper, get em.

Maybe the 550's are less sensitive to this, who knows. I know from bitter experience chasing my tail on 750's that I always now use resistor caps and non resistor plugs.

Indeed, Mr Sliver does sell the DR8ESL plugs for the 500, the 550 and the 400. I made the mistake of buying these plugs from him and started having problems with my 400. As soon as I ditched the resisted plugs and fitted D8EA's, problem solved.

I think you need to post the video on youtube, then post a link to it on here.

Who doesn't use a electric ignition. Don't see many hot plugs about these days.  ;) ;D

I have points on most of my bikes, except the CD250 U's where it was standard and the Thundercat.

Just humour all ignitions are electric even those with points.  ;)
