Looks good and coming along nicely though.

All that time spent will seem very worthwhile when you get out to ride it I think. It's great to see these stories of this era bike coming back into use.

Very good thread.

Had another couple of hours on the build tonight. Tonight’s job was fitting and setting new points and condensers (I may go for electronic ignition if they prove to be troublesome.....but will give them a try first). The original points didn’t look too bad but I bought some new ones anyway. So after setting the gap i got out the multimeter so that I could set the timing with the buzzer.... well bugger me I couldn’t get any continuity from the new points, as if they weren’t closing properly. I had to take them back off and still couldn’t get any continuity across the anvils. Turned out they had some kind of protective lacquer or something on the faces.. I had to rub it off with fine wet n dry, don’t ever remember having to do that before. Anyway they are on now and it wont be long before I’m ready to try starting her up  :o

Old mechanics trick was to drop the new points into a small tin of petrol while you pulled the old ones out.. Then dried them off and installed them. The petrol dissolved the coating and never had any troubles.
No one does it these days as it has been so long since anyone changed points on a car etc.. I still have a dwell meter around somewhere as well as my home made test lamp for Static timing setting..  Ahhh the good old days :)

Hi Rob, very nice job you are doing considering it was only going to be a "tidy up" and not a full resto'. Could you tell me what the new exhaust system is as i need to change my shot 4 into 2 system on my imported K1.

Hi there adespin, thanks for the comments... yes i do seem to have done a bit more restoring than I originally intended. But much of the bike has only been cleaned, most of the chrome, mudguards, wheels, lights are all original, tank and sidepanels untouched although I will touch up some missing paint on the sidepanels. The exhaust is a Delkevik made in the UK by D&K in Stoke, they do seemto be popular and a very competitive price to say they are stainless steel. I haven’t fitted mine yet so I can’t comment on the fit but it sure looks good out of the box.... mine is the short pipe version

Couldn’t resist chucking the tank on to see how she looks.... ::)

Still need to clay bar and polish the tank but the paint is decent....also need to do a bit of local touch up and then re lacquer the sidepanels.... Then its time to see if she will start...

Oddball  ;D .... it was one of only three colours for that year’s model, Boss Maroon. Probably wouldn’t have been my first choice but its growing on me  :o

I must be a bit odd because I like the poo brown ones.
I once stopped in a petrol station and an old boy came up to me and said nice bike but why did you paint it in the wrong colour. He was adamant they were only made in blue or gold.

+1 on that.  There's nothing like the sound of a dead engine coming back to life.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Had a frustrating couple of days in the garage since returning from holiday on Thursday... Routing and re-routing cables to finally get them something like... But mainly with the elctrics. All of the components are back on the machine except for the speedo and tacho (2 wires each so should be simple enough). All the plugs around the battery box are straight forward and basically impossible to get wrong although there is a green and a red spade connector which appear to be redundant (not connected when I bought the machine)... top right of photo.

On paper connecting all the wires in the headlight bowl should be easy enough as they are all colour coded. However once connected i have a working tail light, the starter button doesn’t do anything, the oil pressure light was on but now off, the neutral light works ok. The indicators were missing so i now have some new stanley indicators with non std color coded wires which could be part of the issue. Once i connect them the left indicator comes on but doesn’t flash the right doesn’t come on but the flasher unit clicks and then when i turn the light switch on the left indicator comes on and the fuse blows!.... I’m not asking anybody for a full diagnosis here but if i could get a little info to help me work out how it should all work that would be great. For example the indicator circuit has green wires, blue wires, orange wires, orange/white wires and blue/white wires. If i knew what all the colours were i.e. live, earth etc it would help me to try and work my way through the wiring diagram. There are also lots of black wires with multi connectors, are these earths or live?. One final question, the front indicators have three wires each, two coming through the stem and a green earth? On the nut inside the headlight bowl. The rear indicators also have two wires coming through the stem but no green earths, but there are places for earths on the bracket where the rubber mounting fits..these aren’t shown on the wiring diagram? Any help greatly appreciated. PS the photo is before the strip down i.e. how it arrived to me.
