help and advice needed
« on: September 09, 2017, 02:32:34 PM »
hi all,

you know I recently rebuilt a little RD125 Yamaha.
I have a problem.the points cam is badly corroded, and acts like a cheese grater on the points heels,

 typically these are unobtainable ,
so,could it be repaired the same as a camshaft?
worn surface cleaned p,and fresh metal applied, then machined back to standard??

 I thought of  camshaft makers/modifiers,
do you know anyone that may be able to do this work ?

 thanks in advance

How about a piece of thin walled tubing to act as a sleeve.  Any increase in diameter can be adjusted for.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Buying parts from the states seems to be a lottery when it comes to tax and post office collecting it, I think the tax is not too bad but the turpin fee of collecting the tax is a set lump, possibly plus percentage. Still if it gets you an otherwise unavailable part that is vital to the bike actually running I geuss it is a price worth paying.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Hi John.

I've ordered lots of (small Yamaha) bits from USA and usually ask the seller if they can send it USPS First Class Mail International (if that isn't in their shipping drop-down) as it's the cheapest option but doesn't give tracking etc. Most of them agree to it.

That doesn't means you won't get Customs charge at other end right enough but I've only had that maybe 4 times in 13 years and I've bought countless parts (I actually have kept the envelope for every item lol - well not the envelope but enough to show date and item and shipping cost).

There are some sellers who use the Global Shipping Programme and you get a Customs charge with that every time. It's calculated at checkout and is a percentage of sale price and shipping price. The seller has no control over it apparently. Afaik they send the items to a hub which deals with the rest of it. I've never bought parts when they're listed like this as the costs seem really high

Hi Foy,

I have been lucky getting parts from the US,
of all the ones  I only got caught twice, but on some I did  use Ebay internation shipping which covered every thing

Are you talking about the twin cyl aircooled model? Have you tried the ACRD forum? If there is anybody who can help with spares you will probably find them on there.

Alternatively you could fit electronic ignition?

thanks Rob,I am on the AircooledRD forum,as are several members here,
as far as electronic ignition,no one makes a road set for the early AS3/RD 125
