Thanks Jon, I feel like I'm cheating my rebuild build not breaking into the engine but its fine and just needs a tidy up and some paint and will look and run like new.

Of course if she develops an issue later down the road we can tackle it then.. but even after a rebuild problems can occur so I'll leave alone for now!

Fabulous timing for a couple of 400 rebuilds !

I'm half way through my rebuild with engine stripped and cleaned, but a trip to the hospital has put things on hold for a bit, so a couple of rebuild threads will hopefully get me back into it !

Can I ask which ever one of you gets their head off first to give me a cylinder liner OD dimension please so I can check if mine is still std

Many thanks, and good luck !
I have just measured the OD of my liners and make them 56.95. At the moment I'm assuming mine are STD.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I was reading through lots of threads and happened to see where Julie measured the liner at 56.95... NOW I know why trigger doesnt like Big Bore kits.. like the 466 at 54.5mm plus clearance that leaves next to nothing on the liner... Note to self... Dont ever think of a 466 Big Bore Kit ever again..

I’ll bet Jock Kerr made a kit like that. A couple of mm was as good as a mile!

I would be interested to hear if anyone has any experience with the 54.5mm big bore kits ?

My engine had 54mm Yoshi pistons fitted when i stripped it and measured up on max piston / bore tolerance.  Bores were slightly oval and new 54mm rings not available, so I figured the 54.5mm kit was an option when I struggled to find another decent set of barrels.  Engine is going back together now, so we'll see what happens, and in the mean time I will keep an eye out for a set of barrels in case I have a drama !

I had a similar issue in that the bike had previously had a Yoshimura 54mm kit and I needed to replace broken rings. In the end I went for a Cruzin Image 54.5 kit pistons / rings/ head gasket for the same price I was going to have to pay for the Yoshimura rings. (Local Engineering shop bored it as necessary) Needed care getting the pistons / rings back in with virtually no chamfer left, but runs a treat now. I don't abuse the engine though. Rest of the bike is standard ie with airbox and original jets.

That's reassuring - thanks for the feedback !

It will be interesting to see if the added capacity gives a noticable improvement in torque - looking forward to finding some time to get it back together !

Just catching up on some past threads. To go back to the original question    ' how much will it cost', my CB400/4 engine rebuild came in at a tad under £1600 inc parts, labour and all machine work. Now I was very lucky as I only had to pay for parts as Trig did all the machine work for me FOC and mine and his labour cost nothing. But it just proves that a full engine job is in no way a cheap thing to do, especially if there is damage to some of the internals that need repair work as mine did.

Your rebuild, Julie,  needed an awful lot doing.  The head welding, new pistons and rings et bloody cetera.   My rebuild only cost hundred or so because the cam chain/ primary chain are fairly new.  To be realistic;  new chains, piston rings, gasket set, paint, the odd bolt where they've been chewed up.  I'd say around  £400.  Spread out over a few weeks and her indoors won't even notice.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Yes Mike, it did need a lot of work doing. If an overhaul is being done just because the engine is 'tired' or burning a bit of oil, the cost would be minimal. I think what a lot of owners do is assume their engine just needs minimal work (as I did with mine before stripping it) but when they get the engine apart they find machine work is required and parts needed that they hadn't reckoned on having to change.
I agree with your figure of around £400 just for a minimal overhaul but more if your changing chains  / shells / valve guides etc.
