Rear Brake Return Spring - CB400f
« on: October 04, 2017, 03:40:53 PM »

So I've come to re install the rear brake lever and spring.. I must admit I'm a bit stuck as to the location of the spring.. I'll try and get a photo later, I'm not sure if all Cb400F's locate the same but mine locates into a hole in the frame on the one end and the other clamps around the brake lever arm - its here where I'm lost.

It only seems to locate by nestling up to the back of the side of the arm for the brake light switch.. this location allows the brake some spring and it works but there is no tension at all.

I must be locating it wrong as I have no pre load on the spring.. any advice much appreciated as I'm trying to be careful with all the fresh paint.. thanks

It locates on the frame down tube and the small arm on the splined brake pivot.
can't get a picture while later but hope the attached helps.

Thanks Paul, yes I keep looking at the same diagram.. and I have the location on the down tube in the hole. Looking at the diagram should the spring locate on the left side (against the small arm for brake switch) or to the right side for the thicker arm that locates the brake are/rod)

I hope that makes sense.. I'm going to feel silly when I work it out , but with the swingarm on its very tight so I may need to drop the swingarm back out.

Place a bit of heat shrink on the long tail of the spring otherwise it will mark the paint on the frame. Honda used a piece of very tight fitting, thick walled rubber type material. I had to use a heat gun to make it go pliable to remove it before getting the spring re-zinc plated.
