Wiring diagram for UK CB550K
« on: October 21, 2017, 09:49:33 PM »
Hi

Does anyone have a CB550K wiring diagram for a UK spec bike. I have a US spec bike on which I have just fitted a UK spec right hand handlebar switch, the headlamp works on the switch but the taillamp is on constantly. I want to see what I need to change to get the tail lamp (and probably speedo backlights) to work on the new headlamp switch.

Many thanks
Dave

Surely a us spec wiring diagram would do, since the headlamp works suggesting there is nothing wrong with the uk switch, the problem may be in the original wiring.... besides they are both probably almost identical.....?

The us spec bike lights will be wired to come on with the ignition. Uk spec allowed user decision to be made.

I’m sure it’s just a case that the rear light is still getting a live feed when ignition is switche on. Find where that’s coming from and connect to new switched live for the headlamp.

If yours happens to be a K3, maybe the last pages of the Owner's Manual offer any help. http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_libretti/500/CB500_550/CB500_550_09.pdf

There is the earlier CB550K version wiring diagram on the oldmanhonda.com web site. As previous link later K3 ( also F1/F2) wiring diagram. Once you have both wiring copies you should be able to cure the fault. The earlier K had slightly different wiring arrangements, no city light & a 5 wire safety module.

All

Thanks for the help I have now printed out the wiring diagrams in the links above. I can compare them against the US diagram and see what I need to change.

I think Jon said it right. My guess is the same, rear light connected to a permanent live in the headlight bowl and needs to be connected to a switched live from the handlebar switch.
Good luck.

That's the brown/white IIRC, the same as the instrument lights.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Or, the front or rear brake light switch is stuck on ;-)

As it's an American bike the front and rear lights will be permanently fed therefore a new connection via a switched live should be found. Front indicators may well be twin element and fed direct also.
Easy to check if either or both brake switches stuck on by disconnecting them quickly to check.

What I know, is that European models use the brown wire for both the position (aka pilot) light and the taillight. On those European models you can also bring these lights on by switching the key to "P". On US models only the taillight will be on in "P" mode. In the "P" key position the instrument lights are supposed to remain off.
This is what I did, but you need a European headlamp reflector* for it: I replaced the 4 Watts Ba9s bulb by a 20 Watts halogen that I now use as my DRL. Saves 35-40 Watts. I'm still looking for a stylish switch to mount on the handlebar so I can switch the pilot light only without the taillight and instruments lights. When I need those, like on entering a tunnel, I can still switch the standard Honda RH handlebar to "P" and so add the instruments lights and taillight.
*I'd have an European headlight reflector suitable for H4 anyway (Cibié, Hella, Bosch, Marchal) and with the Philips X-treme Vision Moto H4 in it, you'll have the very best. On countryroads in the dark the UStype headlamp is next to useless .
