Hello! New SOHC 1971 CB750 K1 owner!
« on: November 01, 2017, 01:04:41 PM »
Hi All,
I recently had an opportunity to purchase a 1971 CB750 K1, and I went for it. I have always admired the old Hondas, never owned one till now. I am looking forward to working on it, and perhaps doing a bit of restoring or customizing on it. The previous owner did a little bit of parts swapping, looks like a set of wheels and forks off of a later model DOHC CB750, perhaps an 80's model, as it has ComStar wheels on it. But, it runs, and sounds very nice with the 4 into 2 side pipes. The oil smells a tad bit like gas, so that is the first thing to do, change the oil! I believe the oil needs ZDDP, so I will use Rotella first, then look for something better. Here are a few pics!

Great to have another USA member Charlie.......I used to go to Ohio on business quite a bit but it was  Marysville, Akron & Tallmadge Ohio, which I guess are a fair way from you. Got the chance to relocate to Rockford  Ill. in the 90's with my job but resisted the urge to go, as it reaches -40°F (= -40°C) in winter there. Found out years later that Rockford was the USA centre for  Bridgestone Motorcycles. Would love to go to the Mid-Ohio swap-meets  :)

Thanks, Nurse Julie, my youngest daughter is a nurse also! She is in oncology, and just passed her N.P. last year. God bless you for what you do!

Hi Ashimoto, I know where those cities are, not too far, but a couple hours away. There is an older road race course over there I frequent, Nelson Ledges, and they just repaved it this summer! 2 miles, and 13 turns, a lot of fun. It is 15 miles west of Warren Ohio.
I was at Mid-Ohio this year again, raced the RD350 and the VTR250, a lot of fun was had by all... the swap meet there is legendary, and if you are looking for parts, that's the place. Also, a lot of bikes for sale, some at not too bad pricing, others not so much lol. The Midwest can get pretty cold in the winter, here in Toledo, we are blessed by Lake Erie, which keeps it a little warmer than say, Chicago. Brrr! I am all for global warming  ;)

Welcome to the forum Charlie.

Agree that any oil not contaminated with fuel is going to be better than what's in there currently.

Nigel.

Just picking up on your original oil question about ZDDP, we've got a thread on here recently that was looking at that.

Over here it seems that the oil companies aren't that forward in discussing it but there's certainly more open debate over there regarding specification levels of oil formulations, primarily lead by such a large base of V8 car requirements.

It's generally accepted that you need it as older designs and metallurgy were based on things like this being in the oil. Guess there's not real interest from modern oil supply chain to test and verify in this age of motor so you're more reliant on anecdotal experience to judge which way you go.

Hi Steve, that's pretty cool, there are a lot of survivors here in Ohio!
