Not good.. cam cover, 3 threaded holes
« on: November 03, 2017, 10:44:18 AM »
So I re tapped a couple last year... painted up engine, new bolts in and just nothing left to get a bolt tight enough... 3 have gone! I should have addressed this but thought it would be ok. engine all painted and in the bike!

Anyone had these helicoiled.. ? I suppose best with engine out.. one of the cuplrits is right under the centre of the frame!!

Time serts are a better way to go, more expensive but better.

Agreed time serts are better they don't tend to unwind like Helicoils
My Guzzi is probably 50% time serts and 10% helicoils. The remanding 40% I haven't tried to snap/undo yet   ::)

Nothing wrong with a helicoil in a blind hole in my book, did some today. Inserts if it is a through hole or a blind that is bigger than M8  ;) [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

For under frame work, weld a nut on the tap and keep it straight. You will also need loads of grease on tissue to catch the swarf  ;) [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

If you havn't access to a welder, you may be able to 'press' the nut on carefully using a vice  (put a piece of aluminium in the vice to protect the thread end of the tap) - generally the edges of the square drive on the tap will break through the thread of the nut and grip the tap. I've got load of taps with nuts on. Be careful when you use it with a spanner or ratchet as the force will tend to pull the tap to one side - they are brittle and can snap if force iis not applied evenly - snapped loads as an apprentice/early biking days. Then its the spark errosion treatment! So be careful!

If you go for a helicoil kit, DO NOT buy a cheap one. There are loads about that are total crap, I should know as family members keep buying them as gifts for me. Go for a V-Coil kit  ;)
