Cost of Rebuild so far
« on: November 29, 2017, 05:57:58 PM »
I've just totaled up what I've spent so far and I haven't even started putting the bike back together, £3220 and I still have an exhaust system and all of the tyres chains brake pads ect. It soon mounts up. [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Golden rule of these old Honda's is NEVER add up what you spent on it, you'll have nightmares!

It's going to look great when it's done, so worth every penny. Anyone who thinks that a high quality restoration can be done for a handful of shrapnel will soon realise that the words 'properly' and 'cheaply' do not go together these days. Keep up the great work.

A big +1 on that.  All my David Silver,  chroming receipts etc went straight in the bin.  Knowing I spent so much would take the shine off the whole project.

It's like if beer was £5 for a pint; wouldn't be as enjoyable.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Project 400/4 cost over £6k in the end and that is only a rough estimate, it's likely to be well over that but I'm not going to count up every receipt!  The good news is that cost included the £780 cost of the bike (the cardboard boxes it came in were free!).
As Bryan and Julie say, it's all well worth it, you can't put a price on fun and the enjoyment of the restoration and of doing a good job.

That included the £800 for the bike but every year now I start buying about 2 or 3 hundred pounds worth of parts at the start of the year to take the sting out of it when winter comes but if I didn't spend it on parts it would be squandered at least I have usable assets I now have an immaculate H1 , GT 750 and I will have a 4 four by the end of the Winter.

I think a lot of people have the misconception that because the CB400/4 is a 'smallish' bike, the restoration costs are also going to be 'smallish' compared to say a CB750. Yes, the majority of parts are still readily available for the 400's, where many parts for the 750's are rocking horse poo but, spares are not cheap for any old Honda.  I suppose many owners on the forum are lucky as we mainly do all our own work / restorations, just think how high the cost would be if you got someone to do all the work for you  :'( :'( :'(

Restoring a bike to a top finish is a work of art and a painting can only be looked at, at least you can ride and enjoy. And also admire it.

Ha, I was going to say that but calling people 'crackers' is not PC, so I'm told  ;D ;D ; ;D
It's like all hobbies I suppose, the fun and enjoyment of using what we have created, mended or fettled, far outweighs the financial cost.

I honestly hate to think how much I've spent on bikes this year... still bikes as a hobby is cheaper than racing them! Its the small bits that also add up, the odd seal and bolt or new tool needed.. still its a great hobby and at least you have an investment at the end of it..  I've justified it in that after a messy divorce.. rebuilding my bike with all the costs were cheaper than therapy!

That reminds me.. I have more stuff to order!!
