Perhaps the 500 is wired differently? Would be interesting to test the 500 with a multimeter to see if they do change polarity. The usual way to wire LED's is with a fused direct live feeding into 2* 12v relays, then the indicator connectors 1 to each relay switching the output to the led lamp. A lot of work to just change an indicator repeater bulb to LED. I took mine back out again and re-fitted a standard bulb. Not actually sure why they reverse polarity, like you I couldn't understand from the wiring diagram how it was happening, but it was. Maybe someone like Ash could throw some light on it.

If you want to use led lamps in the indicators, don’t you just need to change the indicator relay for one that’s suitable for leds?

Yes, the original type rely on the resistance of the bulbs to discharge a capacitor.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I'm not making this up, it's very well documented on t'internet. They honestly are opposite polarity.

I am really interested in this question. I am no electrical guru but I notice the 500 uses a 2 wire flasher relay whilst the 550 uses a 3 wire relay.

Be most interested if someone can clarify this point

If you think there's light at the end of the tunnel it's usually another train !!

I agree Paul. Been a mystery to me for a while. Some bikes do this and others don't, but tried two of mine CB350F and GS1000 and they both reverse polarity. Jump in anytime you can Ash.

All the SOHC sub looms have 3 wires for the relay  ;) On the two pin relays you just leave off the ground green wire.

When I get home tonight I am going to check my CB750 to see if that does the reverse thing as well. Got me re-interested in this again now as I didn't find an answer last time, just took the LED's back out and refitted a bulb.

Maybe it's because the CB550 has two idiot lights where the CB500 has only one? Just a guess.

Relay depends on country, US was 2 wire UK 3 wire, as to the single idiot light on the 500 it don't exactly change polarity, it gets power from the ones that are flashing and grounds via the ones that arnt

Interesting question! as Trig says all CB's have a 2 wire indicator relay (3rd wire green-earth/ground) I think the answer starts with the orange & sky blue wires from the indicator switch (as image CB750) There are electronic devices to do the job, but not sure as yet, how its done.
