400/4 Seat (DS)
« on: December 11, 2017, 08:37:36 PM »
Anyone bought one of these metal based copy seats from DS?  If so, are you happy with the quality and where did you source the rear decal/stencil from?  They seem good value but seem out of shape at the back or perhaps it’s just the DS pic.

No idea about the seat itself Ian but the stencil comes from Piki. I use his Honda seat stencils a lot.

Thanks Julie, I used to get stuff like that from a good friend in Lancashire until the big H threatened him with a very expensive law suit - I’ll pm Piki.  Really impressed with your engine rebuild - not long now, eh?

Ive had one for about a year now- not that I've done a years riding on it- it smartened the bike up (Ive had 2 fibre-glass ones on it from when I first brought the bike in 2009) I'm happy with it. I know it doesn't have the decal on the back but Im not fussed. It came well-packed and yes, Id recommend them to anyone.

Yep, engine getting there Ian. If you haven't pm'd Piki yet, I have a spare stencil you can have.

These metal based DSS seats are pretty close to the original... maybe the rear is taller than I remember compared to the seat on my original F2. I have two plastic based ones, one from DSS ... neither fits as well.

Also got a stencil from Piki.... from Spain ?....I used a leather/vinyl silver spray paint that Timpsons sell !

That's the paint I use, works well and I get about 10 stencils out of each can, doing 5 thin coats per seat.

I have an original seat base with mounting brackets.. its been welded and has some rot on one corner that could use a little weld but apart from that its rock solid. I also have foam and vinyl cover with strap , I suspect even though the cover is old it may be a replica but always looked OEM. PM if interested.

the two f/g seat bases I had were worn and the bracket moved (not while going along!)- so the DSS seat overcame this obvious defect and the fact that when open for servicing- the f/g was strained and cracking.
Regardless of the HONDA stencil on the back, Id recommend the replacement/upgrade. You can also adjust the position of the lock male spigot once more!

I've bought a DS metal - base seat and used it for this year's riding season. It all seems to be well made and is very comfortable - recommended!

You say to use the silver paint from Timpsons is this the correct colour I thought white or off white would be closer does the silver look better?

Just looked and I'm not convinced now that I got this one from Timpsons, possibly off eBay.
Colour match is spot on, sort of a whitish silver looks very good in my mind.
Sorry, not very clear pic but the colour is called Silver / Argent 312/20

Many thanks guys and gals for the input - I have an original base which is very good but totally wrong cover and I also have a plastic base one which I got years ago (probably near 25) from Bill Head in Preston - made by R Wright and still as new.  I think I’ll use this on the blue bike but after the recommendations here will go for the DS copy and Piki stencil plus the paint from Timpsons for the red bike I was gifted and now has lots of NOS stuff obtained from DS when genuine front discs were a tenner!

From your last pic Julie - were you the lady in the Nescafé Gold Blend ad and still working your way through the freebies?

I contacted Piki and he can supply one but thanks for the offer - not in the Chain lube ad either?
