Honda ss50 clutch
« on: January 28, 2018, 11:15:32 AM »
Hi just restored my Honda SS50. Rebuilt the clutch ( it’s the single plate type) with new plates . Cleaned and inspected it and put back together , with all the parts.
However it won’t engage , no matter how I adjust it . Advice ?

When you say it won't engage, do you mean no drive from engine to gearbox, or it won't disengage as in won't release the drive from the engine to gearbox?

Right, so it doesn't  disengage. Is there any "feel" at the clutch lever that things are happening? Did you ensure the small actuator that fits in the release bearing was located properly (the bit that engages with the release fork in the clutch cover) as they can fall out easily unseen. Was it working before you fitted the new plates?

Hi yeah there’s feel at clutch lever . When I adjust the adjuster it meets resistance and I back off 1/4 turn . When I pull lever in the drive is maintained to real wheel it doesn’t make any difference. As far as I know I didn’t see it fall out .

You could actually be feeling the return spring fitted to the release arm on the cover casing, and possibly the previous owner has lost the bit, I'll see if I can find a picture of the bit I'm talking about.

I take it your talking about the little tube piece with the spring inside ? I fitted that piece.

What you where referring to I assume was the "Oil through piece" and it's spring, the bit I mean is this. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Silly question, but are you adjusting it correctly, I don't know what manual or details you are following to adjust it, but Haynes manuals don't always give the correct method, the Honda 90 manual for example is the opposite of how it should be done, causing many owners headaches, but I've not seen the SS50 Haynes to know.

The Haynes manual doesn’t say how to adjust so I adjusted the way I’ve always done other clutches . Eg wind in until meets resistance then back off 1/4 turn . Not sure that is the right way .

If you lift the clutch arm on the side cover by hand, do you feel at any point the pressure other than the return spring? There should be a marked step/increase in pressure once the internal part of the release mechanism contacts the release bearing inside. Also, is the adjuster bolt left or right hand thread, as it changed part way through production, and going by engine/frame number is not really a good guide, as both types of casing fit, and who knows what may have been changed/swapped I've 40+ years.
