Infamous front left engine mounting bolt problem
« on: February 11, 2018, 03:45:18 PM »
Hi again when removing engine the above mentioned bolt snapped in half. So nut and half bolt in situ. Looking at end of bolt it is slightly into engine casing,I suspect if I remove with Dremel etc I could end up with a leak.so all solid,no leaks,do I rebuild and leave this engine mounting out of eqaution???

Oh dear, you are having fun. Don't ever leave an engine mount bolt out, Honda didn't put them there for no reason.
Edit....should have said that a broken / missing engine bolt would not pass an MOT.

I just done mine last night, the bolts snapped when I was taking the engine out of the frame so I had to wedge a screwdriver between the engine and frame and cut the bolt with my air saw with half a hacksaw blade. But the problem last night was removing the captive nuts with the end of the bolt in it. What I done was drill through the nut at 90 degrees to the bolt with about a 4mm drill, I then increased it 1mm at a time until it split the nut and cut threw the bolt I dug it out with a screwdriver and hammered the remaining bit of bolt into the hole and it came out the other side. Well done, perseverance paid off in the end for you. Luckily, my engine bolts came out with no problems at all. We have a CB550 here that was a totally different story, bolt snapped, rest of bolt corroded  in the hole and it took some serious heat and even more serious hitting with a very large hammer and punches to get it out. It gave in eventually though !!!.

Julie, On the 550 was that the long rear bolt which the battery neg attaches to? Mine took me two full weeks to remove with heat, hammers, drills, penetrating fluids, blood, sweat. I was stunned that the cases survived, just about unscathed.

It was a front engine mounting bolt on this one, some numpty many years ago had replaced the original bolt and fitted a stainless steel bolt because he fitted crash bars. It took Trig and his mate a very long time to remove it, because it had corroded and sort of welded itself to the bolt hole. Much swearing went on that day  ;D
