The end closest to the camera looks well and truly stuffed!

Agree with Hairy on that one, definitely knackered. You should have given me a shout about the bronze bushes, I usually have stock of them here.

No problem, you have them, that's the important thing. You could probably find a used part for the swing arm.

In the words of my long dead uncle " That is totally crodged mate" The collar is usually more worn than the bushes

Steve at 400four bits has one on his site, no price but described as 'good' and it looks OK from the photo.
He's normally reasonable for prices and very helpful.

If you can’t get a good one and would like to use the original, I’m sure Philpotts would grind/hard chrome/grind yours.  Send the new bushes with it and tell them how much clearance you need.
Surely much cheaper than one fork leg as they don’t have to straighten it first. A phone call should get a ball park price.

May be better spray welded and skimmed back, but if spending that much why not have a replacement made.

will take a look at the website

if I was to get one machined, is it ordinary steel? do I get a stainless one made? what tolerance on the bushes? out of solid bar? is the wall  thickness critical?

Cant use solid or where do you put the bolt that holds it all in. Sizes for wear check are in the manual and no idea on grade of material

I made my own swing arm spindle for my Triumph 500, it has a bolt through the same as yours, line reamed the phosphor bronze bushes 0.001" clear, and drilled and tapped the swing arm for grease nipples each side.

Material? I used free machining mild steel, but any EN* steel good for this sort of job will do, its not actually under much load as most of the stress is in Shear.

* I make drag bike components, wheel spindle, drive shafts etc, from EN24 https://www.steelexpress.co.uk/engineeringsteel/EN24T-properties.html

I thought my 750 centre bush was hardened but when I showed it to the guy I work for 3-days/week he took a scriber to it and said it wasn't hardened. I can't see why the 400 one would need to be hardened in contact with a plastic bush but no expert on this. What's the best way of determining if a surface has been hardened? Anyone know?

In 40 years doing this stuff I havn't come across one that has been hardened, not saying there isn't any, just never come across any. EN24 is a pretty tough material, the miles that we do on old classics like these will probably see us out without having to replace it ever again if greased.
