Strobe timing light.
« on: March 09, 2018, 06:34:21 PM »
As my POS timing light has decided to be working sometimes and sometimes not, I need a replacement of good quality. Am looking at one of these  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SP8000-Ignition-Timing-strobe-Lamp-light-with-digital-advance-and-Rev-counter/182940061390?epid=12002713091&hash=item2a9813cece:g:amcAAOSwgY9Xc5ih

Anybody used one, are they worth the money. Cheers all.

That is toooo much £££ for a strobe light. I am sure the last time I was visiting Watford classic cars, that they had them for less than a 20 pound note  ;)

Hi All,
I too bought the cheaper version, basically dead as a do-do from day one, a few odd flashes when turning the engine over, dead once  started.
nice bike,nothing in the bank

I guess I wont be buying that then..... Any recommends for a good make and model, it appears to be the inductive pickup that's the problem with a lot of these strobes?....... What make is that sub £20 one Trig.

Strangely that's the very one I am replacing. Works about 1 in 3 flashes and sometimes not at all. When the engines revving away merrily to strobe electronic ignition the last thing you need is an iffy strobe lamp. The CB350F boyer ignition has to be strobed at 5000rpm, and the GS1000 at 2500rpm so it's best to get a move on.

I have my original strobe I had from the early 70s that was used in series in HT circuit - still works but not very clear strobe image ((I'm not as clear as I was in the early 70s!) - can you still get that type as not sure if it's the clip on HT lead connection that's the issue with the intermittent strobe image?

As they say in Private Eye - WELL FANCY THAT!

I've just fitted the Newtronic ignition I bought from Trevor (firet49) so I bought this one.

It was £12.95 +£4.95 postage when I got it and the £19.95 postage in the current listing I assume is incorrect. Anyway, it works OK. Pick up is a little sensitive but I managed to get a good strobe even on 2/3.

I think it's one up from the cheapest. Does one need a rev-counter? F mark lines up when idle, advance mark lines up at 3k. Do we need  more? Won't see much use in my case.

Electronic ignition itself seems great. I know people say points will never let you down etc etc, but, really, fed up with always fiddling with it  ...  ???

I have the accuspark 8000 and it does the job perfectly well, as for points and condensers when mine start to get a bit naff on the 350 it will be electronic ignition straight away, can't be doing with any faffing around, and as buying points and condensers is a bit like an unlucky dip where quality is concerned now, i would rather have the modern reliability of electronic ignition.

Looking at comments made elsewhere about this strobe, it still has the same problems as others mainly the inductive pickup can be very hit and miss. This is the same problem that I have with my existing Draper unit. Makes an easy 5 minute job into half an hour of frustrating fiddling. Have now bought a secondhand Gunson strobe that the reviews say has a rock solid pickup. When I get it, I will report back how good (or crap) it is. Same as this one but better condition   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GUNSONS-12-V-DC-TIMESTROBE-XENON-TIMING-LIGHT-AND-INDUCTIVE-PICK-UP/382399864099?hash=item5908cedd23:g:UF0AAOSwnHZYl0MQ
