That is toooo much £££ for a strobe light. I am sure the last time I was visiting Watford classic cars, that they had them for less than a 20 pound note  ;)

Indeed. This looks like the best deal out there:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AccuSpark-Professional-S8000-Ignition-Strobe-Timing-Lamp-Light-/331737007734?hash=item4d3d110676
Looking at comments made elsewhere about this strobe, it still has the same problems as others mainly the inductive pickup can be very hit and miss. This is the same problem that I have with my existing Draper unit. Makes an easy 5 minute job into half an hour of frustrating fiddling. Have now bought a secondhand Gunson strobe that the reviews say has a rock solid pickup. When I get it, I will report back how good (or crap) it is. Same as this one but better condition   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GUNSONS-12-V-DC-TIMESTROBE-XENON-TIMING-LIGHT-AND-INDUCTIVE-PICK-UP/382399864099?hash=item5908cedd23:g:UF0AAOSwnHZYl0MQ

Glad it's not just me that can't get one of those things to work, I still use my battery and torch light bulb to set up the timing.

Cheers

I had one of those Gunson ones, and it was also very hit and miss, threw it in the bin and got the Accuspark which has been a lot more reliable, but then they are all made cheaply abroad with lousy quality  control, you either get a good or a bad one no matter what brand.

Been reading loads of feedback from various places before I got another. It appears that all the inductive ones are a bit hit and miss whatever the make. Whenever I think I have found a reliable one, someone always reports back that their one was crap. What about the expensive ones like Snap On, are they any good. Don't mind paying out as long as I never have to buy another. Probably all Chinese s**t like everything else you buy these days. A whole nation who's entire output is just millions of tons of Landfill a year. Sorry, it's turning into a rant again.

That Accuspark S8000 is the one I have that didn't work at all - is there any about that use the strobe HT inline rather than using clip on induction - maybe that's the issue!

They also get bad reviews Phil. Loose connections on the plug and leads with the same intermittent result. Also no way to reach plugs 2&3 without some home-made extension lead. The new ones all appear to use the same rectangular pickup component. It's that causing the issues, some are made well others not. That's why I'm trying the Gunson as there are very few complaints. That was until Kev chipped in with the bad news.

Roy - I picked up a MAC strobe light a couple of years ago on eBay second hand. It's a superb piece of kit - wasn't cheap but will last me until I’m old and wrinkly I suspect...

S/H Snap-on timing light on ebay Roy. It's up for £10, reportedly in good working order. It might be worth a punt. Item number 112854110548.

Been in the garage today to finally set the timing on the GS1000 now both my new (used) strobes have arrived. Got the timing set okay with my existing Draper lamp that has decided to have a good day today. As for the used Snap-On and Gunson, they are both dead as a nail. Bloody rip off eBayers, they will be going straight back. Why do they bother to sell broken kit as working, they know they are coming back?
