Classic insurance
« on: April 13, 2018, 09:37:30 AM »
This is a question that is asked often on the various classic bike forums that I am a member of. Everyone is on about the prices ect, just one question has anyone ever made a claim on any of these different classic policies, I have found that with cars you may get cheap policies but some of them are very reluctant to pay out and will do anything to avoid it, it would be beneficial for everyone to be recommended a company that has gave good service after a claim has been made. Has anyone got any good or bad stories about making a claim on a classic bike.

I normally end up with Adrian flux. My 750 took a whack to the front weeks after getting it Bent spokes, bent single cut front mudguard, side stand, smashed clocks and headlight bucket and fork ears. So not a cheap fix. The tit that hit it denied all but I got paid out fairly quickly so no complaints from me.

I have never claimed for damage, the only thing  was a puncture about 85 miles from home up in mid wales ,

the service was first class ,That was with CIA insurance,
BUT,they are not so good any more, got very expensive, deleting cover to maintain price,

this year my insurance was for the CB500 and RD125, quoted £140 renewal,
happened to read the "small print" and found "recovery" was an extra £65 per bike !! effectively adding £130 !

since got great cover from Peter James, everything I need for £140 plus £10 set up fee.

I use Peter James myself , this year I got an unlimited  mileage policy for my 3 bikes as the previous one was 1000 miles per bike which I can cover very easy, I go out most Saturday mornings and do my favorite circuit of about 120 miles so its easy to go over I made the first claim of my life when I got a puncture on my GT750 and didnt want to leave it anywhere, also its tricky to fix on the road with the 4 exhausts, but they came and took me home within about an hour and a half.

Carole Nash renewel has come in at £181. Up £50 from last year. Seems a bit steep to me.

Don't take the first offer with Carol Nash, call them up and ask why. My quote for renewal went up over £200 and yet I'd sold the Blackbird that was supposed to have increased the premium the year before. They reduced the full premium by 50%. It pays to call up and deal with an insurance company personally.

:Will certainly do that. 180 for 55 with a clean licence, no accidents and a half decent postcode is too much for a 42 year old 550.

I tried them ,they quoted  £180 ish, were most indignant that another broker quoted alot less.

hence I went to Peter James, used him ages ago when he was Footman James, this is the first since he went solo

Mine was £180 this year too, seems to be the magical figure they pluck out of the air, it was £140 last year.

Think I'll try Peter James. What often puts me off changing insurers is having to go through another proposal form and trying to remember how many years n claims I have so suppose I can only blame myself.

I was always with Lynbrooke until getting laid off put bikes on the back burner. Could not fault the service, added a ca125 for final 3 months of the policy, no charge, added a Ntv650 to the policy mid term, only cost £17,68 or some such piddling amount. Annual renewal never went up by much and was around £120 for 4 bikes and 3 riders, any combination. My main point of attraction to the policy was the buy back salvage clause in the event of total write off. I love my sidecar outfit, and have pretty well every part that would be needed to rebuild it if say it was burnt out. That and the fact they never needed that phone call to try to beat prices back down. Well I wiĺl ring them first once my bike and finances are ready to go back months road.
I was with Carol Nash before until they decided to refuse cover for a bike with an engine change without an engineers report. Quite silly really, swap the cb500 engine for a cb550 one, no problems. Swap a bmw r90 engine for a r80 one with 1000cc barrels and heads, they had kittens. They were ok with my one claim ever, but then changed hands and the call centre seemed less helpfull after that.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
