A different subject matter today for the plane enthusiasts. Only 3 miles from home at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Coningsby. Planes getting ready to take off.

Dead jealous, I could watch and listen to them all day, the sound of a Merlin engine gives me goose bumps.

We are spoilt really Dennis, having these lovely old planes so close to home and I still run out of the house to watch them when they fly over our back garden. It's a busy time of year for the BBMF and not many days go by without seeing them fly over. The Dakota takes off later too.

Beautiful aircraft. We arrived in Durham by train today just before 1pm to the sound of a Spitfire overhead. Turns out Great Northern have decaled one of their trains in RAF 100 year livery and the ceremony was in Durham Station with the RAF band. The Spitfire looked like one of the memorial flight aircraft. Needless to say it drew a huge crowd :).

Yes, that was one of the Spitfires we saw take off, it shows it going to Durham on its schedule. We have a busier schedule around here with planes than we do buses....only 2 a day!!!

I'm at the other end of the spectrum.......living a few miles from the BAE Aircraft Factory at Warton, Lancashire. Most days I can hear the Typhoons being tested overhead........mostly I hear them before I see them, as they are pretty damn quick going over my house. Fridays are busiest as they seem to build them during the week, then have a flurry of testing on Fridays.      Like Julie, I HAVE to see them and many a spannering session get's interrupted as my lickle old sparrow legs get in gear and I dash out of the garage for a looksee....usually 'just too late'.

If anyone is into WWII re-enactments, Lytham hosts a brilliant weekend over 18 - 19 August 2018 https://www.facebook.com/events/459538754427529/  We have been the last three years (since we moved here) and it's a great weekend..........there's usually a Spitfire Flypast and a static Merlin Engine start up.....bring yer ear defenders.

The mood and atmosphere are splendid, with lots of WWII vehicles on display - all in immaculate condition and many of the people who devote a lot of time and effort to preserving the past, are only too happy to talk you through the history of their Jeep/ Half Track/ Garrard Carbine/ Bren Gun etc etc. with Germans, Russians, Yanks and Brits in authentic Military Uniforms in abundance.

I'm not able to host anyone, but if anyone wants to go, just PM me and I'll happily give you the pros and cons on how to get the best out of your visit.

My Daughter and her Husband have just moved up here from 'darn sarf' so I am working on how I can 'borrow' his de-activated Lewis Gun or his Lee Enfield .303" Rifle for the weekend so I can join in the frolics !

RAF Coningsby is home to two frontline, combat-ready squadrons and is the training station for Typhoon pilots so we have plenty of them flying around Monday to Friday 9-5. The Typhoon display team are also based there and watching and listening to them practicing in the air is fantastic.

Yes, the Vulcan IS the best ever aircraft in my book. Awesome sound with amazing agility.
I have booked a flight in a Spitfire from Biggin Hill as my retirement present to myself in August, its very expensive (could have bought another bike) but my uncle flew Hurricanes as a pilot sergeant in the Battle of Britain from Kenley and it has always been my dream to fly in a Spitfire, I can't wait for the big day  :).

Agree about the Vulcan. I always enjoyed a Vulcan display. Enjoy the Spitfire flight. I'm really jealous, but I hope you get great weather for the flight.  8)

We are going to have to do this on our next trip to the UK... last time we did the Norton Factory tour and watched some BSB practice at Donington but that was before I joined this wonderful forum or had the joy of owning a SOHC (400/4).
The better half has family at Bradford and we always get a car so we will just need to plan the trip around some good shows and try to get to some bike meets as well.. note to self... Must start planning.

The Vulcan was most impressive, the noise was unbelievable you could feel your insides vibrating when they piled on the coals, enjoy your Spitfire flight, it will be an amazing experience.

Nah, that was sour grapes from the Frogs, withdrew it's certificate of airworthiness after theirs crashed, in spite of B.A. spending a fortune modifying the fuel tanks and refurbing the interiors. Bloody Frogs!
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!
