My favourite is the yellow but I am getting to like the blue, was a bit cloudy but worth it. :)

The 750 was H reg, engine number 1004***. Never got to see the owner of either of them.

Out and about at Boston Bike Night. There was a massive turnout tonight, possibly 8-10,000 bikes of all shapes, sizes and makes. Impossible to take any photos that really show the number of bikes and people there but will put some on when the official pics come on line. Great evening out.

One bike there was stunning. It was built from boxes of bits by a chap we know who lives in our village. It's a Moto Guzzi, 1946 I think, other than that I know nothing about it at all. An absolute peach though. Edit, just worked out it is a 1949 Airone Sport 250cc. [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

We went for a ride to Marlow in Bucks on Saturday. I took the Morini the O/H took the rebuilt CB250RSA to clock up the final 50 miles before it's 500 mile service.
Traffic was awful on the A40 due to the world cup so we came back on the M40 for the last 10 miles but keeping speed down to 55. The 250 siezed solid! 2 hour wait for recovery.
I begun to strip the engine down yesterday, not a pretty site. Holed and melted piston, scored barrel, scored cam and bits of piston under the valves.
Not sure what to do now, if I buy another engine I won't know its history and most engines for sale are out of the bike so buying blind. I can get the cam reprofiled and maybe try and salvage the valves or buy new and get the seats cut if damaged? I'm not sure about the crank until I get to it but likely to need new mains, maybe I'll try SEP to rebuild it, anyone used SEP?
It's a shame as the O/H loves riding the bike now she has passed her test but it looks like that's it for the Summer for her :(

Wow, what a shame after all your hard work in rebuilding it.

Do you have a close picture of the spark plug tip? And which grade of plug is it? Hope you don't mind me asking.

Nigel.

Hi Miguel, I'll dig it out when I get home, just going into London to watch the flypast. It was new and the correct plug.
The piston has done some damage to the barrel as in its scored. When I drained the oil there was about 1/2 litre but it was on the mark 200 miles ago. No leaks and no sign of burning oil either (I rode behind the O/H to check). I noticed the air box was covered in an oil mist when I stripped it and assume this was blow by as the piston melted!
I would like to rebuild this engine (again) depending on cost. Do you have any recommendations for who can rebuild the crankshaft?

What a shame. Give Barry at T & L Engineering in Bedford a call for Crank work.

Here you Nigel. The plug is a NGK DR8ES as detailed within the Haynes Manual and bought new.
Just going back into the garage to finish the strip down and initial assessment of the damage. Looking at the bits of piston in the sump it appears as though the gearbox has mashed a lot of the shrapnel into powder!
Thanks for the tip Julie. I may require his services!
At least the flypast took my mind off the carnage  :-\

The holed piston may be as a result of too lean a mixture or detonation (pre ignition). Check plug colour, timing and mixture are correct when rebuilt.

Sorry, I forgot to add the photo of the plug. Here goes.
The crankshaft small end bearing is beyond repair so it's refurb crankshaft if possible. Thanks for the tip Julie. I will add any progress details to my previous rebuild thread and not hijack this one!

Can i see a pic of the other piston. What is a little strange is, the holed piston is very clean of any carbon deposits.

That plug looks very light gray (weak) to me
