Demise of the German
« on: April 27, 2018, 08:20:51 PM »
Took the BMW for its MOT today.  The engine is really clattery with the vibrations being felt through the bars.  It burns oil and it handles like a pogo stick due to a worn monoshock.  Despite a few faults it scraped through.  It's also a heavy old beast to manoeuvre, which doesn't do my dodgy back any good.
After some haggling with the MOT bloke about the price, I've finally reached the decision to part with it.  At least it won't be in the way when I  get the 400four out of the shed.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

What is it with you old boys and refusing to change the worn out mono shocks?
I'm in the process of changing the one on my dads Trophy 1200 as it has finally totally given up completely.
Even though I told him about 3 years ago
My dad is still refusing to bin the old one even though it has now bottomed out and taken a chunk out of the swing arm and peg mounts.

If it was just a case of spending  £138 on a shock, I would have bought one ages ago.  It's the cost of the shock and, possibly,  a replacement engine,as well as the shock, the final drive - last time I greased it is worn.  The splines are wafer thin and hasn't got lots of life left.  The petrol delivery hoses to and from the pump are a bit perished.   The paintwork isn't great either.  I'd rather concentrate on keeping the 400 in good nick.

I get that as I'm in a similar position with the Triumph that too has started burning a little oil and showing its age. Its managed to drain half a tank of fuel in a couple of weeks just sitting in the garage due too naff hoses and leaky tap.
I don't think my dad will part with it even though he's finding it too heavy as my mum bought it for him.

Keeping the 400 makes far more sense to me.

I've not long bought a Motobatt for it too so I'm giving it to my mate for his FJ1300 and his old, tired battery can go in the Hun bike.

I haven't got a Welsh side.  I'm British.   Cut me in half and there's the Union Jack going through me like a stick of rock.
