Chrome tank trim
« on: May 29, 2018, 11:18:20 AM »
This is my first question here, so be gentle. I have searched for the answer and I'm still unsure, so here goes.

Did the 1972 500 Four have the chrome trim and did it go all the way round or just the bottom edges?
If it was fitted, is it the same profile as the seat trim or smaller?
Is it double sided and push on or single sided and stuck on?
Is it prone to cause rusting on the tank edge where water collects?

I know that the original is now discontinued and there are many alternatives out there that will do the job. I'm just trying to avoid getting the wrong size or profile. Thanks in advance.

Thanks James but at £300 a set I won't be buying them, I'll look for an alternative.

Sye - was just trying to show you what the original spec set looks like. I agree, $300 is a little excessive. Someone looking to do a concours restoration will pay that.

Menno supplies a decent alternative (single piece) when he paints a tank set. As oddjob suggests - worth dropping him a line. See pic below for reference of what Menno supplies..

As a suggestion about concerns of rust forming where any moisture/water may get trapped you could consider injecting/brushing some Finnegans Wax Oil (or similar) inside the the trim and/or the edge of the tank where it sits before fitting.

I don't know why people worry about rust under the trim the only time most off these bikes get wet is when they get washed.
Mine get used in the rain and the trim will need replacing due to discoloration long before the tank rusts out
Current bikes
Honda CB750k1 Valley Green Metallic
Honda CB750k1 Candy Gold
Honda CB550k Candy Jade Green
Honda CG125

Kawasaki ZXR400 J

Indeed my 500/4 did a decade mostly as my only transport, 20 miles each way whatever the weather with the original tank trim in place without rotting the tank. Strictly no Molly coddling, wash and wax shampoo a couple of times a week in winter but also thanks to a sidecar being fitted it even went out to play in snow.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
