Tax and MOT 400/4
« on: May 20, 2018, 08:52:21 AM »
New system up and running, so just taxed the 400/4 on line and it knew that it was subject to this 40year rule.  Simple yes/no question about modifications and it was done - taxed from May 1st so I have lost 3 weeks of free tax 😂. Will probably get Dr. D in Kirkwall (MOT man) to look over it when it’s convenient.

Sounds simple enough Ian. Was yours already done as a Historic vehicle or did that happen automatically throughout the taxing process?

That was probably me Roy 😊😊 I have just tried and although it comes up with the new declaration for me to tick and it says it 40+ years old, it is still showing as bicycle and not historic, so it wants me to pay !!. Never mind, I'm not that desperate for this particular one, will sort it out another day.

Yes Julie, already Historic, think it’s a trip to the Post Office if it’s still bicycle or unlicensed like my CB77.

Must say I did expect the system to fall over so I did mine when I got up - about 7.30 as I would like to use it before they had to fix the bugs.

Ian

Strangely enough, I tried just for fun yesterday and it would have let me tax it as it said that as the records show I am on an Island with no convenient method of using it on Mainland GB, no need for MOT. That is ONLY true for the outer isles but not Orkney Mainland - but we know they don’t know their arse from their elbow!

Who remembers the recent Passport fiasco.....or the DVLA getting rid of paper Tax Discs and 'losing' over £100M revenue in the following year from 'untaxed' vehicles ? - so I had to smile when I read that the 'system had crashed' by 10am today.

Why didn't the DVLA just introduce a system whereby the vehicle becomes exempt on it's 40th anniversary of it's registration.......so that the 'system' is spread over 365 days of the year rather than just one day ?

I watched some of the Royal wedding yesterday....marvelling at how 100,000+ people could be a part of a massive undertaking which ran like clockwork and how hundreds of guests, participants, staff, police, ambulance and service personnel (and Horses) could all be assembled in the right place at the right time.......made me thoroughly proud to be British.

Fast forward one day and the DVLA system crashes.....makes you embarrassingly uncomfortable to be British............LOL.

Is there a Government Department where all the duffers and pillocks who fail miserably in their Civil Service jobs are assembled and whose sole purpose is to spend their working days dreaming up hare brained schemes which have little chance of success.........is it called the DTF Department.......Doomed to Fail ? Enjoy your Sunday folks.

I think if they took a logical step like that, then many people would ask why there is a need for this Dick Turpin method of extracting two lots of revenue for the same item when vehicles are bought and sold.  The other thing that brasses me off is that when you tax on line the money disappears from your account within seconds but refunds are sent out by post and always arrive on Saturdays when banks are shut.  We might think they are stupid, but they never miss a trick to steal from us.

I just taxed the little RD,rated historic ,but it still claimed I needed an MOT,
after entering the 16 digit number,it confirmed the bike, and said successful.
nothing further about MOT

Have just taxed my 500K1. The reminder asked for valid MOT. The Mot runs out in about 6 weeks. There was no yes/no question about modifications etc as the MOT is still in force when the tax starts 01/07/18. So all good. BUT, how will authority know that an MOT not required (mid July mine runs out), as it only applies to vehicles not "substantially changed" in last 30 years. Not all 40yr old vehicles and it has not been declared.

Just "taxed" my 750F1 which I switched to Historic earlier this year, the tax reminder stated that the vehicle required an MOT so I do not know whether I need one when it runs out in September, very strange.
