Because modern fuel (last 5 years) contains increasing amounts of ethanol, which turns lining materials to mush, allowing leaks to happen again, and blocking fuel taps and carb jets which a sticky mess.

There are now Ethanol proof liners, I'm sure that every lined tank Menno turns out is not a disaster. But I agree to a point, if you don't need it don't do it. With mine I used the same cleaner that comes with the liner kits to clean the insides of my tank. It came up spotless so I didn't line it. Bit of a problem if your tank leaks though, in this case a new tank would be my choice as they are available and the 400F paintwork is quite simple and cheap.
I'm know Menno doesn't line tanks routinely, only if the customer requests. His tanks are acid dipped prior to any work, so they are scrupulously clean inside before lining.

Who is Menno?
Menno Dek. Painter in Germany who many of us use on a regular basis for doing paint work on our classic Hondas. The best painter in my opinion and I know many others have the same view of his work.

If Menno got his act together and sent me an image file, he’d be in the forum sponsors section with Piki and Marcel.

Hi, has anyone ever painted a Honda CB 400 Four tank with Menno? Results? I did one set of a Honda CB 400 Four side covers plus tank, but was not happy with the result. The selfmade tank stickers by Menno (two layers) were not fully covered by clear coat, so there was a white reaction around them. He doesnt paint/seal the under side of the tank against corrosion. Side covers were not sanded on the side (frame tube side). I sent tank back for repair stickers and spraying underside, he never sanded or cleaned the underside, he just put a shot of paint on it and my clear coat now has metallic floks in it. Yes he offered to fix it again, but my patience was over. Maybe he is better with non CB400F tank with no stickers. But yeh I seen better painters..

I have a 550 painted by Menno and am very happy with it. I can see a defect in one side panel but that fine as its still superior to the original finish.
I think the clear coat is a little soft and when mentioned he offered to re coat for free even though I bought the bike pre painted from another forum member. I did not take him up on his very generous offer as I couldn't be bothered to send it off and didn't think it was worth it.
My 750 was painted by local painter and that also has a very minor defect that's also fine. The clear coat is a bit tougher even though painted in the same clear coat as the 550. From memory I think it was Sikkens so not cheap crap.
No one paints the underside of the tank to the same finish as the topside and No one paints the backs of the side panels.

I will also add that I have seen better but I have also seen much worse and I will be using Menno in the future as he stripped and cleaned the tank were as the other painter did not.
If you want your tank and panels backsides painted then you should ask.

Men no recently painted my CB250RSA tank, side panels, front mudguard and seat cowl. Decals were made by Piki. Everything was perfect, no complaints whatsoever. Finish was far superior to standard and the decals were of excellent quality as always. I would have no hesitation to use Menno again.

Hi Green1, I bought new black side cover for my Honda CB400F, I didnt mean he didn't painted the back side, I said he didn't sand and painted the sides nicely, he cut corners.
I hope my pic gets posted. Of course you don't finish the underside of the tank like the top side, but at least some color/paint to seal the white primer and with a ruby red tank and a bright white inside looks strange.

I am surprised that Menno use now Piki decals, one layer. I will contact him to redo my tank again (third time).

Kind regards,

Emiel

Here the two layer sticker Menno made himself, again he fixed it. But I prefer a printed one layer sticker, of course the aftermarkets versions can be bad quality and than the clear coat can run behind the edges.

Sidepanels were smooth on the outside, they are the black aftermarket versions like David Silver has, but even so, when they are rough you need to put filler/primer on and sand it! Like all paint work, the quality is set by the pre-work...

Hello Emiel, I have painted this tank end 2014. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

And of course sometimes things can go wrong or repairs can go wrong.
But as everyone here knows as well I will solve any problems for free.
So please send me your tank and sidepanels as we agreed in october 2016 you would do.

On the other hand; I guess anyone would love to have his set painted for 365 euro including everything nowadays.

Yes Steve, you are right. I have to get my act together - sorry.
