Running motor with LH sidecover removed.

Hi folks, I'm preparing to replace a leaking gear shift spindle seal on my 500K1 and want to check that the clutch pushrod seal and counter sprocket shaft seal aren't leaking as well.  They don't appear to be, but can I run up the motor to warm/distribute the oil to help with diagnosis with the crankcase cover removed?

Being a 500/4, I'd say yes, probably be a good idea to clean all the road dirt and gunge thrown off the chain in there, that way with it clean and dry any leak will show itself clearly.
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

If you mean the sprocket cover then yes, however if you mean the generator cover then not advised. You say crankcase cover but it's important to say which one you mean. I'm fairly sure you mean the sprocket cover but you can never be too careful.

Hi mate, I mentioned LH (left hand) side cover in the title and the clutch pushrod seal and countershaft sprocket seal (which I mentioned in post) are also under the same sidecover as is the gearshift spindle seal.  :P

Yeah got that Andy BUT you could be rebuilding the engine and testing the seals for leaks whilst the generator cover was off as well, if you've ever started the engine with the generator cover off you'll know why I was making sure it was just the sprocket cover.

Fair enough mate!  All good.  I've fired up the motor and can't discern any leaks from other than the gearshift spindle seal.  I'll replace them all nonetheless.

Don't forget to tape up the shaft spline and clean the shaft or you will damage the seal lip when fitting

Did mine on Sunday, i removed the old seal by drilling into it with a tiny drill bit on low speed. Once the bit was through it just grabbed the seal and pulled it free.

Best thing i found to clean out the recess was cotton buds.

My gear shift shaft had burrs on it from where the chain had been rubbing on it, the previous owner must have been riding with the chain very, very loose.

As luck would have it, the one seal I don't have is the clutch pushrod seal (which I thought I had. :( )

Weather has been crap here in Perth the last few days, so I haven't been in the shed to replace the oil seals yet.  It's just a Colorbond shed and freakin' freezin' for half the day!  >:( 
 
I now have two gearshift spindle oil seals in case I stuff one up, and the clutch pushrod seal has arrived as well.
I'll fit them tomorrow as the temps might be a bit better, and anyway I'll fire up the electric heater I found in an old storage box if it's still too fresh!  ;D.  Once that's done, over to a mate's place to polish the crankcase cover then back to refit and go for a ride (if it's not raining!  :-\ )
