Don't get Trig started on the costs, financial and environmental of the Armed Forces, I never hear the end of it !!!. It costs just under 4k an hour to keep a Typhoon in the air, joy riding or sight seeing as Trig calls it  :P

Wot, no Buccaneer?  I served my apprenticeship with Hawker Siddeley at Brough making those - are there none left flying now?

Julie you might be right with the £4,000 per hour figure for a Typhoon, although it would surprise me if it was the case when maintenance and other costs are taken into account. I would have thought that perhaps £40,000 per hour was nearer to the mark, as a modern small business jet will easily exceed £6,000 per hour when hangarage, insurance, crew and maintenance charges are accounted for. Although not shown as up - front costs, all of those must exist for the armed forces, and on a much greater scale?

Some ten years ago, our light six - seat twin (Cessna 310Q) was costing almost £800 per hour to operate (that's why I no longer fly complex types, retirement just prohibits it!).

Most impressive, that must have taken some organising, and no Ian there are no Blackburn Buccaneers flying anymore, Thunder City did operate at least one airworthy example but I think they went out of business after a Lightning that they operated crashed.

Cheers

Well here's a did you know!

Did you know that way back in the early 90's, I had a phone call from a Mr Mike Beachyhead to do some signage for him. Whilst traveling to site with him in his posh car we got into a conversation about flying. I told him how I had been up in a microlite a few times etc, and he said that he also done a bit of flying. He didn't elaborate any further. It was only later I was to discover that Mr Beachyhead was the owner of the only two English Electric Lightnings in flying condition and about 3 Hawker Hunters. He is/was the only civilian pilot licensed to fly Lightnings. He was also the owner of Thunder City in Cape Town, South Africa where I lived at the time.

I'm not a complete idiot.....some parts are still missing.
