Sounds like you had a great day out Steve. Mick, it was very busy at Coningsby, loads of plane spotters on their step ladders and cameras with lenses bigger than the Hubble Telescope. Fantastic seeing the Typhoons all going up in quick succession. Awesome sight and sound. I should be used to it now but still love seeing it.

They came out over this way above my house about 11.45 you could hear them approaching from quite a distance. They were in formation still but no jets with them.

There's a general air passage over here which lays below and south of Heathrow airspace, normally helicopter traffic in and out of London with quite a few safe ditch parks available should the need arise!

We had a medical heli landed about 100mtrs from front door and couple of weeks ago.

We were at Beachy Head today, where there is an RAF memorial, on our way back from Classic Le Mans, and were thrilled to watch a Spitfire flying around, presumably before heading to London for the flypast.

I recognised it straight away, but was saddened to see how few people even noticed- to them it was just another aeroplane.

Spitfire by Beachy Head is a regular occurrence here in nice weather.. They fly from Biggin Hill  (and Headcorn I think) usually the two seater, which you can book a flight on if you've plenty of cash. Two flew over last week, Merlin engine porn !

I watched it from St James Park. Awesome event. Shame about some of the crowd control and the four rows of barriers erected on the pavement stopping thousands of people getting into park apart from one police controlled zebra crossing. I had to jump over them in the end like a geriatric hooligan and risk the potential arrest on the grounds of diminished responsibility :o otherwise I wouldn't have seen a thing.

Those four were the ones I wanted to see the most. But never mind passing Duxford on the M11 on the way home I got to see a Spitfire and Blenheim fly over head practicing there display for the upcoming air show.

I have just watched the youtube video of the BBC's footage... all 14 minutes of it and it was a wonderful sight to see such iconic Aircraft and then the formation of the Typhoons was perfect... and to top it all off with the Red Arrows.. Wish I could have been there to see it live..
We dont seem to be able to flypasts as well here in Australia.. No point doing it in Canberra, that place is only full of Politicians  or Public Servants and all they would do is complain about the cost.
We dont even do Airshows much these days.... I did my Apprenticeship in the 70's with Hawker de Havilland so there was plenty of Military Aircraft around to get your teeth into.. I spent 2 years of that time in the Hydraulic shop which was amazing experience. No super Electronic servo assisted stuff then, just very precise hydraulics run under high pressure..
Anyway.. link to the footage below for anyone interested :)

This vid shows where the planes went from, joined up and then went afterwards.

Yesterday I achieved a lifelong dream to fly in a Spitfire at Biggin Hill. What a day and what a fantastic experience to fly in a two seater fighter that had seen action in WW11 and had also shot down a ME109. I thought I would just be a passenger but the pilot who is a former Sea Harrier pilot allowed me to fly the plane for a full five minutes with left, right, up and down manoeuvres. The trip was finished off with a victory roll :). I will always remember the noise, vibration and the smell of hot oil and exhaust fumes.
I retire in 3 weeks and this was a perfect retirement present! Shame it was over so quickly, but the flight was captured on two go-pro's in the cockpit so I have the videos as a reminder of a great experience. The hanger tour was also absolutely brilliant.
