Interesting Auction item
« on: July 21, 2018, 10:53:46 AM »
Just received next month's classic bike.
Someone is selling a 400/4 with only 1 mile on the clock. £5/6k sounds like a bargain.

1977 Rickman Honda CR750
1999 Honda VFR 800FX
1955 750 Dresda Triton
1978 Moto Morini 350 Sport

Sounds a bit better than this one in the link below. Frank makes big, big claims about originality but this has an F2 clock. It's slightly earlier reg'd (YDN)  than my 1st 400/4 XDN128R and that was definitely a Varnish Blue F1 (pillion pegs on frame loops). I always thought mine was reg'd in York, as I got it from my dealer mate there but I am wondering now if it came from the the same dealer as the one Frank is selling in Scarborough. Amazingly the Yellow ones are much loved now but back in the late 70's quite a few were the last to shift from dealers showrooms.

If you check out the third picture here, it looks as if it has suffered a bit in storage:

And £5k-£6k is only an estimate and it only takes two to push it up.

Strange how the frame and engine numbers are only 1 number apart. Considering that was manufactured in 1978 (same year as my CB400/4) I would expect the numbers to be vastly different, as they are with mine. It is very grubby for a bike that has never been used, even down to the dirty grease / oil staining on the points lead cover material. I hope it sells well though for the owner.

Y'know, call me a suspicious old git if you like, but something doesn't smell right here, and I don't think it's the new paint on the engine. Or else it's been stored in some really cruddy premises. Would love to be able to see the DVLA history.

No DVLA history if it has never been registered  ;)

That's a mistake on Bonham's site, the engine shown is 1073193 (I think)

To be used, the engine would need , at the very least, a top end rebuild.
Even with oil in the sump, the internals, bores, rings, valves  etc would need inspection for corrosion.
The exhaust will also have some degree of internal tin worm after 40 years.
As a collectors dream or a museum piece maybe.
