CB 750 F2
« on: August 03, 2018, 02:45:46 PM »
After seeing SumpMagnets post about his F2 I thought I really should get around to sharing my own build which has been ongoing since last October

As bought last September

Seemed a nice enough machine (at first glance).

After fresh petrol, oil and a speedy MOT courtesy of a mate decided to take it for a short run to Seaton Carue.

The journey highlighted some fueling issues and a quite prominent oil leak from the head around no. 1 cylinder, there went my hopes of enjoying the last month of decent riding weather.

So the strip down commenced earlier than planned in mid October 17

Apologies I haven't done a brilliant job documenting the early strip down it was a little rushed.

Engine out! (Christ they are substantial lumps!)

Some damage was noted on the head stock at this time where a chunk had been taken out of the lock stop and the bottom yoke "modified" to compensate (A hole drilled through the stop with a nut and bolt to take up the steering slack...).

At leas this gave me a bit of an idea what to expect for the rest of the bike (bodges to buggery ::) )

Will post more when I get home and access to the other photo's.

She looks a whole lot prettier than mine :)

I do like them in black..I think it's a colour that sits well with the shape and the lines of the tank. But...as with any 40 year old bike...there will be bodges, there will be nasties, and there will be worn out and knackered bits. But then...if we wanted pristine....

Instead, it's a challenge to make an old thing as good as new.

God...though...trying to get my engine out today resdulted in failure and a trip to casualty after I sliced my hand trapping it between engine fins and the frame tubes.

Keep up the pics :) I want to see how others get on with one of these. Whilst the older Ks are nice....I personally prefer the F2 for looks.

If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Agree Peter K1's a little lively, K2 a little wiser and
The F is just a K having a mid life crisis

K, K, K, K, K and oh, K. Especially a K2. 😁😁😁😁😁 I just don't get what the F was all about personally.
Good luck with your build Moxey, I'm sure she will be a lovely bike when finished.

I like them all  :D your F looks great. A mate of mine had one back in 1980, an F2 in black with comstar wheels and a stubby piper 4 into 1. It sounded awesome. I had a 550k4 at the time which was in slightly better condition than the F2, but I would still have swapped  :)

I think one probable reason the F’s were possibly less popular than the K’s is that by the time they came out all the other manufacturers were kicking Honda’s 4 stroke ass with their DOHC offerings.... but thats a long time ago now and doesn’t count any more. No doubt somebody will have some statistics to bugger my theory to hell  :D

I like the shape of the tanks and the pointlessly large rear disk. They seem to make for a good café racer

I'm actually intending for it to be silver one day (I've always wanted a Silver Machine ;D) but yes I do think they look good in black too , I guess the previous owner took inspiration from a GL1000 paint scheme (I picked up on that from the music video for Queens Crazy Little Thing Called Love).

Oh no hopefully nothing serious? I know the pain well I severed 3 of my flexor tendons at work back in May delaying my project massively, still not at full use after nearly 3 months, only just been given the go ahead to ride again, here's hoping yours is just tissue damage (Y).

Shape wise the F series have definitely grown on me once modified a little, my biggest persuasion was seeing a friends Phil Read replica and Yoshi823's custom F2, the K's are definitely the better looking standard in my opinion.

Eventually totally stripped down, biggest hold up was the engine otherwise a relatively pleasant experience.

Headstock bearings decided to escape and disintegrate following removal, luckily I had already budgeted for tapered head bearings from All Balls.

Took the frame to work for repair and "improvement"

Don't know if its apparent here but a big chunk is missing from the left side of the steering stop.

Made a few templates of some gussets for reinforcing a few areas (I have access to CAD and more but my breaks are short at work so cardboard was easier).

Cut some plates on the saw equivalent thickness to the tube (1.5mm ish)

Then nicely asked one of the CNC lads to do a little over-time (I didn't trust myself on the manual).
