400/4 Exhaust
« on: August 05, 2018, 10:28:44 PM »
Hi All ,  while the tanks away getting painted i thought its about time i ditched the Motad and looked for a sweeping exhaust , the only place i can find a complete system is Silvers so my question is does anybody have any opinions of them as they are a bit pricey .
Cheers

Hi Dave, a very slightly irrelevant answer to your query, as I cannot comment on the quality of the repro exhaust,(yet!). Whilst it is a lot of money I painfully remember, in 1973, having to purchase a new exhaust system for my 15 month old CB750K2. The price equated to approx 20% of the value of the bike, which, if your 400 is in reasonable condition, comes out at a very similar ratio. In case you're wondering, I purchased a Dresda 4 into 1, bitch to fit, very loud, had to be removed to change oil filter, and just did not look right, so I agree with the path you're taking. Regards, Mick.

None of the repro downpipes I have come across  have double-skinned downpipes like the originals...not even the Yamiya ones.

See this thread about them:

A well preserved set of OE headers, collector and silencer is a sound investment.  ;)

I believe the DSS supplied version is or was UK made by Motad, and looks the same as OE but the headers were all separate and of course single skinned, though the chrome does look good.
I bought a set of these direct from the manufacturer after seeing their post on here. They were surplus stock supposedly but as I haven't yet tried to fit them I am not certain they will go on easily
... My genuine collector was supplied (around 2010 ish) with two non-OE  single skin headers, all from Silvers, and they needed flexing to fit up as I think they were a few degrees out on the crucial bends. Roll on a couple of years and I sourced two genuine unused headers , one from CMS was perfect the other old stock and needed re-chroming at £80 !!
Plan is to fit the replica set sometime then mothball the genuine system while it is still pristine !
Wish I had the Yoshimura off my original F2 .... great noise  ;D

Not sure if DS are the same as Motad, but I had a replacement headers and exhaust from Wemoto (which I believe were Motad) and they were fine until my bike was knocked over when parked and the outside pipe scratched. I got another pipe from Motad but the downpipes now seem to be stainless steel rather than chrome and now has the typical dis-colourisation of s/s pipes.

The Motad thats on the bike has only discoloured slightly near the headers otherwise its held up well, I probably will get a set from DS and we will see how they are.

For me, you may as well keep the motad on there, it looks no better or worse than an original system which on a personal the silencer always looked like the designer got fed up and said feck it that'll do, just my own take on it, go get a delkevic or a 4 into 4.

I was going to go for the David Silver system but heard stories of the headers not fitting correctly and hitting the sump , also the issue with not being double skinned, I bought a second hand set of headers for £50, done a few repairs and got them Re-chromed (£300) so worked out about the same price but they fit and they are double skinned.
