Simoniz VHT engine paint
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:29:00 AM »
I am 95% through painting a Black Bomber engine and have run out of paint. I am using the usual Simoniz SIMVHT31C thats a really good dull silver match for the original Honda colour. Unfortunately Simoniz have stopped making it and moved on to SIMVHT31D, the difference here being the C & D. Simoniz say it's the same colour. which it may be, but it is not the same finish. The D variant is a really smooth bright (and frankly horrible) finish that resembles cheap kids plastic jewellery. So anybody about to re-paint an engine beware.

Now to the problem. The C variant is advertised still (and I have even emailed sellers about this) but they always send the D variant thinking its the same. I now have 6 cans of the crap. So, does anyone have a spare half can of SIMVHT31C so I can finish this engine. The alternative is to have everything re-blasted and start again with something else. Simoniz have really dropped the ball with this one. Thanks all.

I will have a look in the workshop later to see if we have any 'C' left Roy. We have been using the 'D' for almost a year now and have noticed no difference whatsoever in the finish or the colour.

Thanks Julie. You need to paint two items from the same engine and put them side by side. There's two cam cover plates on the 450 that are nearly the same casting that I painted with each type and the difference really is miles out. It may not look too bad if the whole engine was painted with D but it's no match. The C variant appears to show all the casting imperfections etc below it, and the D variant appears somehow thicker and covers everything to a smooth almost gloss like finish that hides the casting marks etc. I don't like it at all, the next engine I may use Ceracote.

It's hard to tell from photo's but those two you posted don't look the same? Hopefully someone has half a can left over.

Yes, I see what you mean Roy. We have never done an engine in a mixture of the 2 as always have enough of whatever we were / are using in stock. There are still places on fleabay advertising the 31C but i expect 31D would turn up. We are still very happy with the colour and finish of the 'D' as are the customers, so we have no intention of changing. What colour is the front of the can on yours, post a pic and i will go have a rummage in the workshop.

Edit....I have just read your post again, I don't think Simoniz have dropped a ball at all, the paint is still great, the finish exceptional, the colour match spot on, so i cant see a problem with the 'D' at all.

It's hard to get a photo that does it justice, but you can just tell the difference on this one. The D is on the right and much shinier.

Does the D look shinier to you? Doubt it's the way I have painted them, they were both blasted at the same time and painted with three light coats?

I have a NOS full can here but, it is not the same as the can in your picture. You may end up in a bigger mess than you are in now if you use the one I have. The can in my pic was the 'C' we went from, to the 'D' without noticing any difference in the finish or colour.

That's the one Julie. Can I grab it off you. How do you feel about swapping that one for two cans of D as I now have 6 of the sods. Maybe the difference is not so drastic but it's just showing itself in my particular application, or the can of D I used is duff?. Cheers your a life saver.
