Standard tyre size best make
« on: August 30, 2018, 11:56:48 AM »
I'm just about to get my hubs spoked and am shopping for the hoops. I would have chosen Avon or Continental but both only do a 4.00x18 rear which they don't recommend for a 1.85 rim. There are some available in the sizes I need but I have no experience of the makes.

What make do you all recommend that do a pair in 3.25x19 and 3.5x18 please?

BT45's for me... modern rubber, good grip, look great on a classic bike imo.

You will get a million opinions here as there is no "correct" answer

Dunlop K something possibly 82? Again classic looks.
I shop at oponeo.co.uk.
Put in your size and loads of options come up.

Metzeler, great looks and handling, will look up codes if you want but similar pattern to Conti

Strange you should say that as I've more or less decided on Metzeler Perfect ME11 3.25 - 19 54S for the front and Perfect ME77 3.50 - 18 56S for the rear.

Hi I'm looking at exactly the same issue. I see in the handbook it says 3.50 x 18 and 3.25 x 19.
I think back in the '70's I fitted 4.10 x 18 on the back, mainly for looks I suspect (!) and the handling was fine.
I used TT100s, Avon Roadrunner, and finally the best were a Michelin PZ2 front and M45 rear, but sadly they don't seem to do those anymore.
The bike currently has modern tyres that look too big and don't seem to help the handling for low speed manoeuvring.

I'm looking to fit Dunlops and wondering if the current K81 TT100 has a softer profile than the 1970's 'originals', therefore enabling a K81 4.10 x 18 on the back to complement a K82 3.25 x 19 (which does seem a flatter profile) on the front? Having said that, they don't seem to do a 3.25 x 19 !?

4.10x18 is the "metric" equivalent of the old UK 3.50x18

Many thanks. I have ordered 360 x 19 and 410 x 18 TT100s from vintagetyres.com who were very helpful, and do a slight discount for a pair on ebay.
As I hoped, the modern TT100 has a more rounded profile than back in the '70s.

Well thats the sizes i used for years on my 500'S and never had a problem, except the rear does not last long before the centre tread is too low

I’ve got a new tt100 3.60x19 in the for sale section, could have saved yourself some money (and I could have stopped tripping over a tyre in my utility!)
