It should pull out and turn anti clock wise to lock. If that doesn't work then we used a clothes peg as this is what we did on the CX's   ;)

Being serious for once there should be a rubber cover on the cable just under the pull bit which if you tighten it clamps the steel rod more so it dont slide back. Dificult to describe, i think it is cone shaped underneath and clamps o 2 or 3 plastic "ears" that stick up from the main outer cable

I don't want a pattern peg.need the American Walmart one.!
Seriously I found I have to remove the grommet rotate my knob120 degrees anticlockwise holding the base of the plastic housing. Am going to tighten my nut as it appears to be spinning. Only rotates on full choke nothing in between

I 'think' the choke set-up is similar to my 1980 XL500s (as image)
Once the grommet is pushed up, the plastic nut below is turned slightly (there are plastic collets within the nut that grip the choke shaft) If there is no resistance on this nut its possible the plastic collets have broken.

Fitted to many honda's from the late 70's and 80's. The USA ones are nearly always cracked, try looking for one off a UK CM, CX and so on.

Thanks Simon, glad the loom worked out.  Good luck with your search for a choke cable assembly...or peg!
