leaky carb drains

(1/2) > >>

pae:
Is this simple? At long last I'm close to firing up the CB650z, but on connecting up the fule today 2 of the carbs drain tubes are pouring out petrol. All I can think is that the drain screws aren't seating (they're tight) but is it is as simple as that or have I overlooked something else? I can't think what.

Otherwise it's close to firing it up now, all turns over OK, just need some fuel!

regards, Phil

Hello, phil, The drain tubes are for over flowing float bowles and the drain screws you refer to are for draining the float bowles.  The over flow pipes are like overflow pipes on the toilet system with a higher level drain hole whereas the drain screws in the bottom of the carbs are for emptying the carbs of fuel like the drain bolt for oil on the sump.  Sounds like your floats are incorectly adjusted or have faulty float valves.

Or are dirty.

A tiny bit of crap in the float valve will cause them to leak. Try tapping the float bowl with a piece of wood to try and dislodge any crap. Otherwise it's bowls off and cleaning time.

pae:
Sorry chaps. complete brain failure there. A short while after posting I was thinking about it and realised what I'd said about the drain screws... :-[

I'm pretty sure I've set the float heights OK, but never checked that they float! Looks like it's bowls off time as Steve says.

Phil

Dave M:
Check the float needles and their seats too.

Doesn't take much for them to seat incorrectly and then you've got the leak you're talking about.
