Satin Black! What am I doing wrong?
« on: November 12, 2018, 09:26:31 AM »
Hi All,
I have sprayed my calipers with PJ1 Satin Black. They have come out as matt as can be, look great but not the satin finish I was after. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Yes, definitely says Satin on the tin.

PJ1 does come out more of a matt finish although it says Satin on the tin. This is what we use and this is the result. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Thanks Julie. I'll try again with a different coating thickness. If it doesn't work then it looks like I'll have to put my hand in my pocket again and buy some VHT.

Deanno, that's the same paint I used on my CB250RSA caliper and it definitely came out with a satin finish.
The paint was very thick in the bottom of the can and it took a lot of shaking just to release the ball bearings in the paint! I shook the can for a good five minutes before the initial spray and for a couple of minutes for subsequent sprays.
Did you cure it in the oven at 100c after spraying?

Yes, some paints are very, very thick and in cooler ambient temperatures, they become even thicker. We find it helps a lot if you stand the can in a jug of boiling water for a few minutes and then give it a really good shake before use, returning the can to the water between coats, then another shake.

The finish can be affected by the cold weather.  Make sure the caliper and the paint is all room temperature.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Warmed the parts, sat the can in hot water, then shook it till my arm dropped off.
Finish is much better now, four coats to this finish.
Thanks for the advice Julie, Laverda and Mike.

Well done 👍. This site is so good for advice, what one person doesn't know someone else will 👏
I sprayed mine in the garage in the middle of winter. I had the dehumidifier on so the air was dry and warmed the caliper in the oven for a couple of minutes. The can was in the hot water all this time.
