Day 4 Home. After the amount of pain I had Sunday night and the passing /pissing out Monday morning I was wondering if I had made the wrong choice. Since Tuesday the progress and drop in pain has been incredible from barely able to shuffle to doing a flight of stairs now without much fuss. Things will only get better.

well done, keep working at it,your over the worst bits,

my hip was 1 year old on the 20th,and its great, not grate !!!!!

makes riding so much easier, and getting your leg over !!!

That's what i'm looking forward to, getting my leg over easier and been able to get my feet on the rests without pain.
It's just 2 weeks now, the staples came out  yesterday now just using a stick and went for a walk around the park today. Steadily.  Happy with the progress.

Well done, I had my first hip done 11 years ago at 65, and my second 6 years ago. Epidural and General  anaesthetic. Had both ops at approx. 7pm on a Thursday, and was eating lunch at home on the Saturday. The NHS care was fantastic and the surgical team brilliant on both occasions. Only ever use sticks. There was very little discomfort. When I discarded my last stick after 2 weeks, it felt great. The more I walked, the better it got. Now I can't tell the difference between my old hip joint and my new ceramic ones. I am back to as I was as a 20 year old, movement wise. Stick with it and as you have found out it gets better on a daily basis.
Exactly what procedure did you have done for you to be stick free after a fortnight.?

When I came out the discharge notes said I could walk without any sticks or crutches, I couldn't believe it but the staff confirmed the specialists notes. I came out with crutches and used them for two weeks. I had slight complications as I already had a femur full of metalwork and some of the screws for that had to be removed to allow the spike of the new hip to be inserted into the femur. My smashed leg had been 1" shorter than my good one for 30 years, I asked if the leg length could be restored on hip replacement (I wore a wedge in my boots) consequently all muscles, ligaments and tendons were two short which is still causing issues 3 years on but getting better. NHS - BRILLIANT!!!!

As everyone has said from experience, keep working it, it recovers much faster the more you do.

Hi Moorey,
As far as I know it was the normal procedure for a hip replacement. top of femur removed, new ball fitted with spike into femur. socket reamed out and a new one  fitted. I had an epidural and a general anesthetic, and found that by the time the epidural wore off the op site just ached rather than being painful. It is surprising, as you have found out, what a difference a day makes.
Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas and New Year.

Week 4 Update a bit of a knock back. My wound didn't heal fully and has been weeping constantly and I ended up with it infected. This didn't come as any real surprise as my immune system is pretty shite due to me having chronic lymphatic leukemia. The plus side is I now recognise very early when I have a infection starting and can do something about it in its very early stages and seek treatment. It's now healed on the surface and the infection cleared up. I saw the consultant yesterday and all is good.  Looking forward to spring and a certain 350, it should be a little lighter than the 750. Onwards with the exercises.  :)

Great to hear you are recovering well.. even with the setback.
I know what Leukaemia can do to you in terms of loss of strength, tiredness etc as my 30 year old son has had ALL for the last 6 years.. he has had pretty much every treatment including Bone Marrow Transplant (failed after 6 months) and then 3 months ago he had CAR-T cell infusion on a Clinical Trial here in Sydney... We have been through the highs and lows with him so Sir... my hat goes off to you and may your health only improve so you can get back onto that 350 for starters :)

Thanks it's not always a barrel of laughs but there are no other options than to fight. Give my best to your lad I am now heading to year 8. I too volunteered to go on the ARCTIC Trial for CLL and the 100,000 Genomes Study England. In the belief the more  people keeping a eye on my bloods the better.

Excellent news, I found riding the bike easier than driving when recovering. I'm 3 years in and still getting better, and keeps getting better.
